Templeton (テンプルトン, Tenpuruton), also styled Templton, is a supporting character in Suikoden and Suikoden II who also appears in Genso Suikogaiden Vol.1. Templeton is a young, attention detailed cartographer whose dream is to map the entire world.
History
|
Templeton was a young cartographer from the land of Kanakan who dedicated his youth toward mapping the entire world in perfect detail and accuracy. For maximum detail, he chose to traverse the world himself, step by step. He held an insatiable curiosity about the world which drove his work.
Templeton had brownish golden hair neatly cut just above his shoulders. He wore light attire consisting of a small navy blue hat, a white shirt, a cream colored vest, and knee-length gray trousers. These shorts were worn to aid his ease of movement. He also wore a large backpack filled with cartography equipment and supplies.
Templeton first saw a map when he was about five or six years old. A traveling merchant who came to his village had a map of the area around his village among his items for sale. Templeton would find himself entranced at how by following the paths on the map, he could reach any destination.
He would become a map collector and as he grew, he began to notice the difference and errors between each rendering of even the same areas. This would spark his desire to map the entire world so that people could travel anywhere they wished with confidence.

While traveling the world, expanding his map, he would have to update his map whenever there was a new discovery or change due to warfare. Although young, the zeal he put into his task was exemplary and he could very easily be considered a master at his craft. As such, he could come of as a little cocky but this is due to his recognized talent and maturity at such a young age.
He would join the Toran Liberation Army during the Gate Rune War, meeting McDohl at the burnt remains of the Village of the Elves. Lamenting the need to adjust his maps, he would join the army in order to prevent more tragedies such as had befallen the Village of the Elves.
He provided the Liberation Army with the World Map and continued to work hard at Toran Castle, mapping its interior from his dedicated workspace. After the war ended, he journeyed the sea in order to find the edge of the world.
Three years later, he traveled the Dunan region. Starting in South Window City, Templeton made his way east where he was stopped and brought to the Mercenary Fortress as a suspicious person where he was reunited with Viktor and Flik.
Viktor tried to commission him on behalf of Anabelle to map the Highland Kingdom but Templeton refused. He also rebuffed Viktor when the mercenary wondered if the 108 Stars were being drawn together again. He would agree to map the fortress in exchange of lodging, however. He gave his map to Leona, leaving while Viktor and Flik were out rescuing a boy from a nearby river.
Intending to travel to Muse City, he would encounter an aspiring mercenary, Colin, on the way. Though he initially found Colin bothersome, Templeton would soon appreciate that he was one of the few people who had an interest in his work beyond the maps that were his final result.
After seperating from Colin, Templeton would meet Nash Latkje in Muse City, deciding to share a room in the inn with him. When Nash noted it must be difficult for a boy to travel alone, Templeton stated that people were more likely to treat a child kindly. He also felt it was only adults who lacked in self-confidence who talked down to others such as children.
Templeton would escape Muse during its attack by the Highland Army and made his way to the Mercenary Fortress and Toto Village, only to find them destroyed. He would also discover that Colin had perished in the attack on Toto Village.
He would give Nanami directions to Coronet Town after encountering her following the attack. He subsequently joined the New State Army during the Dunan Unification War in order to not only have new places to map but also to oppose forces that would either stop him from mapping their facilities or would destroy towns, leaving them to be remapped.
During the war, Templeton thought about returning to Toran Castle for a while once it ended, but then resumed his journey to find the edge of the world. At this point, it could be assumed that his maps of Toran, Dunan, and his home of Kanakan were as complete as they could be.
Abilities

Despite his young age, Templeton is already an able cartographer who mapped the whole Scarlet Moon Empire and City-State of Jowston, creating two World Maps in the process.
His abilities also proved useful in war battles, as he fought on the front-line together with Hugo and Sergei in the Gate Rune War. His knowing of the terrain especially came in handy in battles against the Highland Kingdom, as he led his unit through shortcuts.
He is not only well versed in the art of cartography, but also knows a lot of the local habits of certain areas. Thus, he was able to notice Nash Latkje's Harmonian accent when they met in Muse City after only a short conversation.
