Humphrey Mintz (ハンフリー・ミンツ, Hanfurī Mintsu) is a supporting character in Suikoden and Suikoden II who also appears in Genso Suikogaiden Vol.2. Humphrey is a skilled but taciturn swordsman.
Profile
Appearance

Humphrey has a strong, rugged appearance with short, spiky blonde hair and sharp facial features, including thick eyebrows, and a defined jawline. His skin is fair, and his eyes are a hazel shade of brown.
In Suikoden, Humphrey wears a full suit of metallic armor with a segmented design worn over black underclothes. The armor is accented with gold details, including rounded studs. He also wore violet wristbands and a short, mustard cape.
His Suikoden II outfit is more geared towards traveling. He wears a green tunic with long sleeves, secured at the waist with a brown belt. Over this, he wears a large yellow cloak that drapes over his shoulders and extends down his back. He also wears black pants and brown boots. His broadsword is strapped to his back and is wrapped in cloth, rather than kept in a scabbard.
Personality
|
A taciturn man, Humphrey's silence causes confusion in others, and some consider him a loner or even unfriendly. But for the most part, Humphrey's silence is not perceived as cold, but rather as shyness.
As such, he is not a strong socializer. Though it is also suggested that Humphrey was more open before the Kalekka Incident, he was never a paticularly gregarious man.
Despite his silent nature, Humphrey would occasionally open up to others. Before the Battle at Floating Fortress Shasarazade, Humphrey told Mathiu Silverberg how he had attacked his commanding officer during the Kalekka Incident; it had been the first time, and, he hoped, the last time, he had slain someone out of sheer hatred. Humphrey also enjoyed a long (albeit one sided) talk with the hero and paid for the young man's room in gratitude.
Humphrey was also a practical man. Despite his shock at hearing of the death of Odessa Silverberg, he immediately recognized that McDohl would be able to succeed Odessa as a leader. When Humphrey and Futch discovered Bright, Humphrey was prepared to destroy Bright should Futch fail to accept him, despite the rarity of the creature.
Befitting his logical nature, Humphrey was also unafraid to ask former adversaries for aid; during the Gate Rune War, Humphrey asked Kreutz to join the Toran Liberation Army, immediately noticing that Kreutz would be of great help to the force. Despite his practicality, Humphrey could also be empathetic, and comforted Futch over Black's death.
History
Imperial Service
Humphrey Mintz was a renowned centurion of the Scarlet Moon Empire, celebrated for his mastery of the greatsword, a weapon measuring over one meter in length. His skill and unwavering dedication earned him the nickname "Broadsword Humphrey," a title that reflected both his martial prowess and his imposing presence on the battlefield.
As a centurion, Humphrey held the highest rank attainable by ordinary soldiers within the Empire. Despite his achievements, he repeatedly declined offers of promotion to the officer class, extended to him by Kasim Hazil. Humphrey preferred to remain among the ranks of common soldiers, a decision that underscored his humility and loyalty to his comrades. In his earlier years, he served under the corrupt general Gillan, though his integrity remained unblemished.

Humphrey's reputation for honor and strength was further solidified during a mission to investigate a series of dragon attacks. It was during this mission that he met Joshua Levenheit, Commander of the Dragon Knights, and the two formed a lasting friendship.
Humphrey earned Joshua's respect by refusing to follow orders to deliver a slain dragon's corpse to Gillan, who sought to exploit the remains for personal gain. This act of defiance demonstrated Humphrey's commitment to justice over blind obedience.
During the War of Succession, Humphrey fought under Emperor Barbarossa Rugner, where he developed a rivalry with Kreutz, a general serving under Geil Rugner. At the time, Humphrey was a staunch believer in Barbarossa's cause. However, his faith in the Empire was shattered two years later when he was ordered to participate in the Kalekka Incident, a brutal massacre of civilians.
Overcome with rage, Humphrey attacked his commander and became a fugitive, marking the first time he had ever acted out of anger.
Liberation Army
|

Following the incident, Humphrey disappeared from public view, only to resurface later as one of the earliest members of the Toran Liberation Army, led by Flik and Odessa Silverberg. The atrocities at Kalekka left him even more reserved and introspective, though his commitment to the cause of liberation never wavered.
When the Liberation Army's hideout at Lenankamp was attacked by Imperial forces, Humphrey escaped with Flik and Sanchez to Kunan, eventually regrouping with the main Liberation Army at Toran Castle under the command of the young McDohl. Humphrey played a crucial role in the war effort, traveling to the Dragon Knight's Domain to forge an alliance with Joshua and the Knights of the Dragon's Den. His efforts were instrumental in awakening the dragons, a turning point in the war.
During this time, Humphrey took Futch, a young Dragon Knight who had lost his steed, under his wing. He also extended an olive branch to his former rival, Kreutz, inviting him to join the Liberation Army. Humphrey's leadership and ability were further demonstrated after the Battle at the Northern Checkpoint when he led the assault on the Rakan Fortress, a decoy to draw enemy forces away from Moravia Castle.
After the Gate Rune War, Humphrey embarked on a journey with Futch to find a new dragon, fulfilling a request from Joshua.
Travels with Futch
|

Humphrey and Futch's travels took them on the road to Harmonia, where they were delayed by the outbreak of the Dunan Unification War. While staying in Highway Village, Humphrey encountered the leader of the New Alliance Army and later joined a rescue mission to Rakutei Mountain to save Kent, a friend of Futch. There, they discovered a dragon's egg, which hatched into a baby dragon.
Humphrey's wisdom and mentorship were pivotal in helping Futch overcome his fear of bonding with a new dragon. By feigning coldness and preparing to strike down the dragon to prevent it from becoming a feral threat, Humphrey prompted Futch to intervene and take responsibility for the creature. This act solidified their bond and fulfilled the purpose of their journey.

Humphrey and Futch subsequently joined the New Alliance Army to repay the hero's assistance, contributing their formidable skills to the war effort. After the conflict, they continued their journey to Crystal Valley to research the mysterious baby dragon, Bright. Along the way, they defended Marid Village in Harmonia from a ferocious black dragon, with Humphrey fighting fearlessly alongside Futch and Nash Latkje.
Though Humphrey's final whereabouts remain unknown, it is said that he planned to escort Futch back to the Toran Republic to reinstate him as a Dragon Knight before retiring to a quiet life in Toran. In his later years, Humphrey passed his legendary greatsword to Futch, who wielded it during the War of the Champions.
