The Toran Republic (トラン共和国, Toran Kyōwakoku), founded in year 457 of the solar calendar after the Gate Rune War, replaced the fallen Scarlet Moon Empire.

Led by President Lepant and former Toran Liberation Army members, it spans former imperial lands, with Gregminster as its capital. Known for rebuilding efforts and democratic governance, the republic was established at the end of Suikoden and appears in Suikoden II.

Overview

The Toran Republic is a democratic nation established in the year 457 of the solar calendar following the collapse of the Scarlet Moon Empire after the Gate Rune War. The republic was founded by the Toran Liberation Army, which overthrew the corrupt imperial regime, and marked a new era of governance in the region.

The republic's government is structured around a President, a Republican Congress, and a Republic Court, with administrative duties delegated to secretaries and ministers. While certain systems and individuals from the imperial administration were retained due to their perceived effectiveness, they would also be adapted, such as replacing the imperial military governors with elected officials such as town mayors and village chiefs.

While the leader of the Liberation Army was expected to become the first president, he mysteriously departed before assuming the role. In his stead, Lepant, a prominent general of the Liberation Army, was appointed as the republic's first president. Many former Liberation Army officers, including Kwanda Rosman, Kai, and Sonya Shulen, assumed key positions in the new government, forming the backbone of its leadership.

With the country being home to many diverse peoples such as the Knights of the Dragon's Den, elves, and dwarves, the political leadership of President Lepant, who kept the nation unified in its fledgling years, was highly regarded.

The Toran Republic has its own calendar, the Toran Republican calendar, which considers 457, solar reckoning, as its year 1.

History

The early history of the Toran Republic was marked by efforts to reclaim territories lost during the Gate Rune War. In 458, Commander-in-Chief Kwanda Rosman led the Toran Army to successfully reclaim the Senan region from the forces of Tinto and South Window, restoring it to Toran control.

With the country then under a generally peaceful and stable rule, many warriors began to leave the nation, with many journeying north to the more turbulent City-States of Jowston. Though Toran would heal from its wars, relations between the two powers remained tense.

Two years later, in 460, President Lepant, with the aid of his son Sheena, forged an alliance with the New Alliance Army of the shattered City-States of Jowston to counter the growing threat of Luca Blight of the Highland Kingdom. The significance of both parties overcoming their historical mistrust was a powerful achievement.

The Toran Republic contributed a force of 5,000 soldiers to support the New Alliance Army's efforts. Following the establishment of the Dunan Republic, the two nations maintained generally positive relations, fostering regional stability.

By the year 475, the Toran Republic had matured into a well-structured nation, with key figures such as Tesla as Secretary, Mose as Minister of Construction, and Warren as Chairman of the Republican Congress. The military was led by the Six Generals, though some, like Valeria, Kai, and Kasim Hazil, had retired to honorary positions, making way for new leaders.

The Toran Republic stands as a testament to resilience and renewal, transforming the legacy of the Scarlet Moon Empire into a democratic and prosperous nation. Its efforts to rebuild and maintain diplomatic alliances have solidified its place as a key power in the region.

Geography

Encompassing the territories of the former empire, the Toran Republic borders the City-States of Jowston to the north, unknown territories to the west, Kanakan via an ocean border to the southwest, and the former Kooluk Empire territories to the south.

The capital of the republic is Gregminster, a city renowned for its art, ceramics, and the iconic Golden Goddess statue in its central plaza. Despite the turmoil of the Gate Rune War, Gregminster suffered only minor damage and remains a cultural and political hub.

The republic has also focused on repopulating towns devastated by war, such as Kalekka in Dana. Though progress has been slow, Kalekka has begun to recover, becoming a notable exporter of wheat. Additionally, the Toran region is known for its abundance of jujube plants, with vendors harvesting and selling the fruit across the republic's towns and cities.

Toran Republic Leaders

As of 475 (solar calendar reckoning, year 19 of the Toran Republican calendar), the government of the Toran Republic was as follows:

By 475, two of these honorary generals had successors while one position remained open.
