Lepant (レパント, Repanto) is a character in Suikoden who makes an appearance in Suikoden II. He is a rich merchant who became the President of the Toran Republic.

History

Rise to Prominence

Lepant was from Kouan, a prosperous town in the Gouran region. From a young age, he displayed a remarkable aptitude for both the literary and martial arts, earning him widespread respect among his peers.

However, it is also said that during his youth Lepant acted in a similar manner to his future son, Sheena, flirting with multiple woman and generally wandering carefree, looking for good times. This side of Lepant would be tempered later in life by duty and, of course, marriage.

As he grew older, Lepant became Kouan's wealthiest trader, and his business acumen and philanthropic efforts were credited with bolstering the town's welfare. His mansion became a hub for intellectuals, alchemists, and scholars, who frequented his estate to seek his patronage and engage in intellectual discourse.

Lepant's reputation as a fair and capable leader grew, and he became known for his charisma, sense of responsibility, and unwavering commitment to his family. Despite his mild-mannered demeanor, Lepant was fiercely protective of those he loved, a trait that would define many of his later actions.

Family and Friendships

During a party hosted by a local lord, Lepant met Eileen, the daughter of a regional lord. The two quickly developed a deep romantic connection and married shortly thereafter.

Their union produced a son, Sheena, born in SY 442. Lepant's devotion to his family became a cornerstone of his character, influencing many of his decisions in both his personal and political life.

Lepant's intellectual curiosity also led him to seek out Mathiu Silverberg, a renowned military strategist who had retired to Seika to establish a school. The two men struck up a friendship, often sharing drinks and discussing philosophy, strategy, and governance.

Lepant provided material support for Mathiu's school, further solidifying their bond. This friendship would later prove instrumental in shaping Lepant's role in the Toran Liberation Army.

Initially, Lepant refused to involve himself in the rebellion against the Scarlet Moon Empire, fearing the repercussions for his family. However, his stance changed dramatically when Kraze Miles, the newly appointed military commander of Kouan, kidnapped Eileen in an attempt to coerce Lepant into compliance.

Enraged, Lepant single-handedly fought through Kraze's guards to rescue his wife, an act that marked his transition from a passive observer to an active participant in the conflict. After this incident, Lepant attempted to annul his marriage to protect Eileen from further danger, but she refused, choosing to stand by him.

Together, they joined the Toran Liberation Army, where Lepant's leadership skills and strategic acumen quickly earned him a prominent role. He was tasked with critical missions, including the diversionary attack on the Duha Fortress during the campaign in the Senan region.

Presidency of the Toran Republic

Following the conclusion of the Gate Rune War and the fall of the Scarlet Moon Empire, Lepant served as the de facto head of the provisional government as the highest ranking officer after McDohl, the leader of the Liberation Army, declined the position. He was later formally elected the first President of the Toran Republic.

As president, Lepant focused on rebuilding the war-torn nation, implementing policies aimed at economic recovery and social stability. However, his decision to retain certain imperial systems, such as the military governor structure, drew criticism from some quarters, including his own son, Sheena.

Despite these controversies, Lepant's dedication to his role and his tireless work ethic made him a popular leader. His presidency was marked by efforts to unify the fractured regions of Toran, reclaim lands occupied by the City-States of Jowston during the war, and establish a foundation for lasting peace.

Later Years

During the Dunan Unification War, Lepant demonstrated his diplomatic prowess by forming an alliance with the New Alliance Army, assigning Sheena to their ranks and issuing a declaration of friendship to counter the threat posed by Luca Blight. This alliance also saw 5,000 troops from the Toran Republic fight in the war.

Lepant continued to serve as president into the War of the Champions of 475, steadfast in his commitment to the Toran Republic. He remained hopeful that McDohl, whom he regarded as the true symbol of Toran's hope and unity, would one day return to lead the nation.

Trivia

Lepant is perhaps named after the town of Lepanto or the battle which took place there. On 7 October 1571, there was a large naval battle in the Gulf of Patras (Greece), near the town of Lepanto.
Lepant passes his sword onto his son, Sheena, after taking on a more prominent government role.
Lepant is the only returning character in Suikoden II who receives a portrait, but never joins the player's party or convoy.
Like McDohl, Lepant's ending in Suikoden was inexplicably changed in the English versions of Suikoden; in his Japanese ending, he becomes elected the first President of the Toran Republic, but the English version says that Lepant returns to Kouan to live in peace with his family.
