The Karaya Clan (カラヤクラン, Karayakuran or カラヤ族, Karaya Zoku) are one of the Six Clans of the Grassland.
Information
The Karaya Clan, led by Chief Lucia, are one the numerous clans that reside in the Grassland as well as one of its Six Clans. Members of the clan are known for their distinctive brown skin, colorful clothing and their use of curved swords in battle. Their home is the Karaya Village.
They are known to be a people with excellent fighting skills, and have repeatedly repelled forces from Tinto Principality, forcing their retreat from the Grassland. They were also involved in disputes with Greenhill Principality and the Matilda Knightdom in the past.
During the Dunan Unification War, the Karaya Clan allied with the Highland Kingdom, out of resentment of their treatment by the City-State of Jowston and the promise of the restoration of historical Karayan lands. Following the war, they entered into reconciliation with the new Dunan Republic.
Their skills in combat make them very influential within the Six Clans, despite their relatively small numbers. Their chief, Lucia, who has led the clan since the Dunan Unification War has something of a leadership role within the Six Clans because of this.
Male warriors of the Karaya used jambiya, a type of dagger which had a distorted blade, were double-edged, and had a groove carved in the center of the blade. Young warriors transitioned to larger blades as they grew. It was a matter of personal choice whether to wield their weapons backward or frontward.
While jambiya were popular among male Karayan warriors, female warriors, with less upper-body strength, tended to use more diverse weapons suited to their talents. Aila, for example, wielded a bow as it allowed her to combine long-range attacks with her ability to located targets by communing with the earth spirits.
