Zamza (ザムザ, Zamuza) is a character in who appears in Suikoden II. He is an egotistical magician who bears the Fire Dragon Rune.
History
|

Zamza was a magician who frequented both Toto Village and South Window City. Ever since he could remember, he bore the Fire Dragon Rune on his right hand. Having a unique rune would be part of the motivation behind his self-aggrandizing nature.
In the past, he studied magic under Dale in the hopes of finding a method to use his rune in a practical way, though his arrogance had made it difficult to even ask Dale to help in the matter and prevented him from ever calling Dale his master. He would eventually develop a fighting style incorporating his Fire Dragon Rune during an ivy monster attack on their caravan.
Dale would banish him for this, stating that if he wanted to become a mere brawler he could do it without his tutelage. But Dale also gave him a supply of Medicine for his burns, tacitly giving his approval for Zamza to develop his magic in his own way. Later, Zamza primarily wielded brass knuckles as his weapon of choice.
He forcibly inserted himself into the ranks of the New State Army when Nanami, offended by his domineering remarks, declared his presence unnecessary. Driven by his high opinion of himself, Zamza joined the army to prove his value.
Due to his conceited and high-handed nature, Zamza spent much of his time in the New State Army complaining about being overlooked, lacking his own room, incessantly talking about himself to anyone who would listen (including Richmond, for five hours), and writing what he referred to as "fantastic letters." He often suggested that less important members should be asked to leave the castle, finding it too hot and crowded.
During the Dunan Unification War, Zamza served as a magic unit captain and a magic instructor. His appointment to the position by Shu was not solely due to his ability, although he was skilled, but rather because, among the army's magicians like Raura, Luc, and Mazus, he was deemed the most reliable and well-balanced choice despite his character flaws.
Following the conclusion of the Dunan Unification War, Zamza continued to serve as a magic instructor in the newly established Dunan Republic, though his personality remained as infuriating as ever.

Trivia
- Equipping Zamza with a Fire Sealing Rune will ensure he takes no damage from his Fire Dragon Rune, although it does mean you cannot equip any other rune as Zamza only ever has two rune slots.
