Luca Blight (ルカ・ブライト, Ruka Buraito) is the major antagonist of Suikoden II and Genso Suikoden Card Stories who also appears in Genso Suikogaiden Vol.1. The Prince, and later King, of Highland, Luca Blight orchestrates the Dunan Unification War out of hatred for the world.

Profile

Appearance

Luca is a tall, powerfully built man, with dark black hair and small, dark eyes. He has strong black eyebrows.

He is always seen in his royal armor, which was white, the color of Highland, with gold trim, with a royal blue cape. His armor consisted of a breastplate, pauldrons, bracers, greaves, and boots. Underneath he wore all black underclothes. He carried a longsword in a scabbard attached to the waist on his left side, marking him as right-handed.

Personality

Luca's cold, violent, and brutal character earned him the nickname the "Mad Prince", and he was feared by all, ally and enemy alike. His only joy came from destruction and death, and his greatest joy was reserved for unleashing the power of the Beast Rune. His hatred for the weak was speculated to stem from despising his own weakness as a child.

That said, he was also considered a general of the highest caliber and not capriciously cruel to his soldiers. He never killed a subordinate just because he didn't like them. However, he was an extreme meritocrat and had no mercy for those he viewed as "incompetent".

Luca was considered an incredibly skilled swordsman as well as a supremely strong and brave fighter. However, he never opened his heart to anyone and always fought alone. He despised his father, Agares, above anyone else but in truth held contempt in his heart for everyone. Even his sister, Jillia, was only spared due to her resemblance to his mother.

As a child, he could be temperamental and easily embarrassed but was otherwise an ordinary boy. He loved and respected both his parents and was sad that he could not spend much time with them due to their official duties.

Path of Darkness

Luca Blight was a man of unparalleled ferocity and cunning, feared and revered by both allies and enemies alike. His brutal nature and martial prowess earned him the title "Mad Prince," a name that encapsulated his demonic reputation. As a leader and warrior, he commanded the unwavering loyalty of the Highland Army, though his methods were as ruthless as they were effective.

Luca's hatred for the City-States of Jowston and the world at large was born from the traumas of his youth. Though his early childhood was unremarkable, Luca was known for his volatile temperament and prodigious skill with a blade. Trained in swordsmanship by Han Cunningham, he was regarded as one of Highland's finest swordsmen by the age of eleven.

In the year SY 443, when Luca was ten years old, the royal caravan of the Blight family was ambushed by a group of brigands. Though disguised as bandits, their equipment and discipline betrayed their origins as soldiers trained by Muse.

During the attack, Luca's father, King Agares Blight, fled the scene, leaving Luca and his mother, Sara, to be captured. Luca was forced to hide as his mother was violated by the mob, an experience that scarred him deeply. Though they were eventually rescued, the incident ignited Luca's hatred for his father, the City-States, and the world itself.

Over time, Luca's misanthropy grew, and he began to revel in violence, seeing it as a means to assert the strength his father lacked. He exacted vengeance by slaughtering the brigands responsible for his mother's suffering, but her descent into catatonia shattered his heart. From that moment, Luca cast aside his emotions, embracing his strength and cruelty as his defining traits.

Though Luca initially displayed open contempt for his father, he learned to conceal his hatred as he matured. His popularity among the Highland Army eventually allowed him to seize control from Agares, as his leadership and charisma far surpassed his father's.

Scourge of Jowston

In 460, dissatisfied with the truce Agares had signed with Jowston, Luca orchestrated the massacre of the Unicorn Brigade, framing the City-States to justify an invasion. This marked the beginning of the Dunan Unification War, a conflict driven by Luca's insatiable lust for power and destruction.

As commander-in-chief of the Highland Army, Luca led from the front, commanding his elite White Wolf Army with brutal efficiency. He took perverse pleasure in slaughtering both soldiers and civilians, leaving a trail of devastation in his wake.

Villages such as Toto and Ryube were razed, their inhabitants massacred without mercy. At the Mercenary Fortress, Luca killed Pohl and nearly murdered Pilika, a young girl, before being thwarted by Viktor and Flik.

Luca's cruelty knew no bounds. After capturing Jowy Atreides, a spy from Muse, Luca manipulated him into assassinating Mayor Anabelle and opening the gates of Muse City, leading to its swift fall. With Muse under his control, Luca began conducting sacrifices to the Beast Rune, seeking to unleash its destructive power upon the land.

As the war progressed and the Highland Army faced increasing resistance from the New Alliance Army, Luca conspired with Jowy to poison King Agares. During a traditional Knight's Oath ceremony, Agares ingested Jowy's poisoned blood and died shortly thereafter. With his father's death, Luca ascended to the throne of Highland, reveling in the demise of the man he despised above all others.

However, Luca's unchecked wrath and escalating brutality prompted Jowy and his strategist, Leon Silverberg, to conspire with the New Alliance Army. They orchestrated an ambush during a night raid on the New Alliance Army Headquarters. Though Luca fought valiantly, cutting down waves of enemies, he was ultimately forced to flee, wounded but defiant, as his men sacrificed themselves to ensure his escape.

During his flight, Luca encountered a wooden amulet, which he opened to release a swarm of fireflies. In their fleeting light, he glimpsed the ephemerality of his own existence and the world around him. For a moment, fear and introspection flickered within him, but he quickly dismissed these feelings. The fireflies, however, served as a signal for the archers of the New Alliance Army, who unleashed a barrage of arrows upon him.

Cornered and grievously wounded, Luca faced the leader of the New Alliance Army in a final, brutal duel. Even in death, Luca remained unrepentant, laughing maniacally as he succumbed to his wounds. His demise marked the end of a life defined by unparalleled evil and destruction.

Luca Blight is fought as a boss enemy in Suikoden II. He is fought in one uninterrupted event by three different battle parties. He holds a resistance to all damage types and has several potent fire-based attacks.
