Gilbert (ギルバート, Girubāto) is a character in Suikoden II who also appears in Genso Suikogaiden Vol.2. He is a Zexen native who is also the leader of a mercenary band.
History
|
Gilbert was a proud and skilled mercenary who earned his livelihood through his exceptional abilities. Originally serving as a mercenary leader within the Zexen Federation, he chose to leave his family behind and venture to the Dunan region in search of employment opportunities when the fighting died down in Zexen.
Having previously been acquainted with Flik and Viktor, Gilbert had crossed paths with them when he was hired by Muse City on a prior occasion, just over prior to the Dunan Unification War. Later, while in the Highland Kingdom, he found himself hired by the Highland Army.
During the Dunan Unification War, Gilbert participated in the initial assault on Muse City as part of the Highland Army. However, he had a change of heart midway through the battle when Flik and Viktor convinced him to switch sides. Subsequently, Gilbert continued to serve the New State Army as an infantry captain throughout the course of the Dunan Unification War. It is worth noting that he reportedly returned the money paid by the Highland Army for his services.
Despite the questionable action of betraying a contract as a mercenary, Gilbert found it morally unacceptable to follow a leader like Luca Blight, who displayed a disregard for innocent lives. This was particularly troubling to Gilbert as he had left his wife, Mary, and son, Thomas, behind while pursuing employment opportunities in the first place.
After the war, having grown weary of conflict, Gilbert chose to return to his family in Zexen, finding solace and peace of mind in their presence. On his journey back, while stopping in Milit Village, he teamed up with Nash Latkje and his former comrades from the New State Army to confront a group of thieves falsely claiming to be the Fire Bringer.
