Gilbert (ギルバート, Girubāto) is a character in Suikoden II who also appears in Genso Suikogaiden Vol.2. He is a Zexen native who is also the leader of a mercenary band.
History

Gilbert was proud mercenary who earned a living with his skills. He was originally a mercenary leader in Zexen, but when the fighting stopped, he left his family back home and drifted to the Dunan region in search of work. In doing so, he left his wife, Mary, and son, Thomas behind.
He was an accquaintence of Flik and Viktor, who had met Gilbert when he was hired by Muse City in the past. Later, Gilbert happened to be in the Highland Kingdom when he was hired by the Highland Army.
During the Dunan Unification War, he participated in the first assault on Muse City but was convinced to switch sides mid-battle by Flik and Viktor. Following the battle, Gilbert continued to serve with the New State Army through the Dunan Unification War as an infantry captain. It also appears he did indeed return the money the Highland Army paid for his services.
While betraying a contract is a poor action for a mercenary, following someone like Luca Blight who would slaughter women and children without thought was a pretty unconscionable thought to most. Gilbert especially felt that doing so, when he had left his wife and son behind to pursue employment in the first place, would be an unforgiveable act.
Following the end of the war and sick of fighting, he returned to his waiting family in Zexen where he was able to put his heart to rest. On the way, he fought alongside Nash Latkje and his former New State comrades against a band of thieves claiming to be the Fire Bringer in Milit Village.
