Tsai (ツァイ, Tsuai) is a character in Suikoden II. Tsai is a craftsman who is so well-known for his skills with spears that he has acquired the nickname of 'Tsai of the Divine Spear.'
History

Tsai was a talented spearman and spear craftsman. He once pierced an iron helmet with a spear, earning him the nickname 'Divine Spear.'
Unpretentious and strong-willed, he was considered first-rate both as a soldier and as a craftsman but considered himself a craftsman first and foremost. Though capable of many forms of crafting, he preferred to work mainly on spears.
He originally lived in Ryube Village but moved into the mountains surrounding the town seeking privacy. His reputation also led to his recruitment by Viktor as Viktor recognized his skill and believed that only Tsai could repair the damaged Fire Spears.
Tsai would agree to help the group, worried about Luca Blight's advance. Too late to prevent the razing of Ryube Village, Tsai recognized Luca's strength and prevented the hero and Jowy from confronting him, knowing they would die in the attempt. Tsai would coninue to aid the mercenary force, eventually joining the New State Army after it was founded.
Tsai served as an infantry leader during the Dunan Unification War, utilizing his outstanding handling of the spear. Although he downplayed his nickname as the Divine Spear, he was still proud of his spearmanship, which he brought to bare against the Highland Army.
During the war, he would return to him home to collect some tools only to be confronted by his daughter, Tomo. It was revealed that Tsai was estranged from his family as he was absorbed in his work. He would refuse to return home with her, saying he had a responsibility to the New State Army. This instead led to Tomo joining the army over Tsai's protests.
Prior to the Liberation of Greenhill, Tomo would once again try to persuade Tsai to come home. Tsai would again refuse, stating that all he had done was made his wife and child sad. He would ask Tomo to tell her mother that he was never found if he died in the upcoming battle.
Following the conflict he reunited with his wife, dragged home by his daughter and seemed to have lived a happy family life from then on.
