The circumstances surrounding Joshua’s inheritance of the Dragon Rune remain shrouded in mystery. Once the bearer of the Dragon Rune, Joshua Levenheit is the former leader of the Dragon Knights. A proud man, Joshua Levenheit was a firm believer in the autonomy of the Dragon Knights. During the War of Succession, Joshua Levenheit and the Dragon Knights allied with the Crown Prince Barbarosa Rugner after being encouraged by the grace and the goodwill of the young emperor, but, maintaining Goya's autonomy, Joshua also took in fugitives from both sides of the conflict, such as Kreutz, a general under Geil Rugner. Following the Succession War, the Scarlet Moon Empire began to see the Dragon Knights not as allies, but as subjects. Many within the Dragon Knights grew dissatisfied with the Scarlet Moon Empire for this treatment.
Following the war, Joshua retained his command. In time, he passed the Dragon Rune to Milia, though whether by death or abdication remains unknown.

During the Gate Rune War, the dragons of the Dragon Knights fell under a sleeping poison, leaving the Dragon Knights grounded. To prevent this from becoming common knowledge, Joshua Levenheit forbade all visitors from entering Goya. Despite this, a Toran Liberation Army party, including Tir McDohl, the leader of the Toran Liberation Army, and Humphrey Mintz, a close friend of Joshua, broke into the Dragon's Den. After they learned of the Dragon's sleeping sickness, Joshua had no choice but to confess that the Dragons had fallen under a sleeping poison.

The Liberation Army quickly helped Joshua Levenheit and the Dragon Knights reawaken the dragons by gathering the items needed to make an antidote. Following this, Joshua Levenheit quickly entered into an alliance with the Liberation Army and thus overpowered Windy's half of the Gate Rune, sending all her summoned monsters back to the netherworld.

After the war, Joshua continued in his position for a time before stepping down from as Captain of the Dragon Knights. He gave his Dragon Rune to Milia who assumed his position. It is currently unknown whether this means that Joshua has died or if it merely means he will live out the rest of his life from that point onward.

Joshua Levenheit (ヨシュア・レーベンハイト, Yoshua Rēbenhaito) is a supporting character in Suikoden. Joshua was the captain of the Knights of the Dragon's Den during the Gate Rune War.

History

Commander Hero, call on us when the fighting begins, and we will rush to your aid.

—  Joshua

Dragon Knight Commander

The circumstances surrounding Joshua’s inheritance of the Dragon Rune remain shrouded in mystery. What is known is that he rose to prominence in an age of turmoil, the Dragon Rune binding his spirit to that of the dragons and granting him both their command and their continued existence in the mortal realm.

Burdened with immortality, Joshua guided the Dragon Knights for over two centuries, never claiming a single dragon as his mount. To him, the loss of any dragon was as grievous as the death of his own kin.

Friendship with Humphrey

Joshua held Humphrey Mintz in high esteem, considering him a trusted friend. Their first meeting came when Humphrey, then a Centurion of the Scarlet Moon Empire, was dispatched to investigate rumors of a dragon’s rampage. Joshua accompanied him, and though his slight frame belied his station, his skill in battle was beyond question.

Together, they confronted the undead dragon Sterling, who had risen as a revenant to guard its fallen master. Humphrey defied his orders in order to preserve Sterling’s honor, an act that earned Joshua’s admiration. From that day, Humphrey was regarded as a sworn ally of the Dragon Knights.

Gate Rune War

Oh you're gonna pay a lot for this one, Joshua.

Though Joshua had pledged fealty to Emperor Barbarossa during the War of Succession, the growing corruption of the Scarlet Moon Empire and its increasing disdain for the Dragon Knights caused a rift.

During the Gate Rune War, when the dragons were struck down by Windy's poison, Joshua was persuaded by Humphrey and the sage Liukan to seek the aid of the Toran Liberation Army.

An antidote was devised, but it required the liver of Black, the dragon of the young knight Futch. Joshua bore the terrible responsibility of informing Futch of the sacrifice, knowing it would result in his expulsion from the order. Seeking to ease his grief, Joshua entrusted Futch to Humphrey’s care, perhaps guided by the Dragon Rune’s foresight into the boy's future.

Legacy

Even after joining the Liberation Army, Joshua remained in the Dragon Knight's Domain, for his death would spell doom for all dragons. Moreover, prolonged absence risked the Dragon Rune's power over Goya waning, leaving the younger dragons unrestrained.

With the help of Joshua and Knights of the Dragon's Den, the power of the Liberation Army grew immensely. Joshua usually coordinated the Dragon Knights' war effort from Goya.

This did not prevent Joshua from entering into battle himself. In preparation for battles, Joshua would be notified ahead of time to ensure he was away from the Dragon Knight's Domain for as little time as possible.

At the last battle, Joshua channeled the Dragon Rune's might to amplify Leknaat's half of the Gate Rune, overwhelming Windy's sorcery and banishing her summoned horrors.

Following the war, Joshua retained his command. In time, he passed the Dragon Rune to Milia, though whether by death or abdication remains unknown.
