Marlowe Cody (マルロ・コーディー, Maruro Kōdī) is a character in Suikoden II. Marlowe is a tutor of Lilly Pendragon as well as a biographer of the protagonist.

History

Lord Riou, you're going to be a true hero.

—  Marlowe

Marlowe was a tutor of the young Lilly Pendragon, daughter of Tinto City Mayor Gustav. He had an extremely timid personality and spent most of his time reading books. In fact, he was entirely self-taught, never having the chance to receive formal education. As books could be very expensive in Tinto, he was very careful with his possessions. Still, along with his learnedness, he long held a desire to be a brave hero as well.

He was frequently bullied due to his shyness as a child but still managed to become friends with Koyu, who protected him, and the other Lampdragon bandits. To each other, Koyu and Marlowe each had something the other lacked, in Marlowe's case he had studiousness but not strength. They were also both outsiders to the wider world.

During the Dunan Unification War, Marlowe met the leader of the New State Army, whose leadership inspired Marlowe to help out as much as he could during Neclord's attack on Tinto. Though not strong nor particularly brave, he was driven to help in whatever way he could. He would then join the New State Army, in part to work on a biography of his new inspiration, which he entitled The Path of the Warrior.

After the war ended, Marlowe founded a library in Tinto City where he taught many children the joys of learning. He would also become a minister when the Tinto Republic was founded after the war.

Trivia

  • Marlowe, along with Koyu, has a somewhat expanded role in the plot if the player chooses to run away from Tinto with Nanami.
  • Marlowe is evidently quite a slow writer. His biography of the hero was intended to be accessible in-game but the idea was eventually cut.
