Card text abbreviations

Card Stories game mechanic

Card text abbreviations (カードのテキスト内の略号, Kādo no tekisuto nai no ryakugou) are a terminology used in the Genso Suikoden Card Stories TCG to refer to card conditionals.

In Card Stories II, these abilities are divided into "continuous", "triggered", "counter", and "rune" abilities.

Continuous Abilities

This denotes any ability that continues to be active for a certain period of time. This includes facilities cards that continue to be effective even after construction. Such abilities are always looking for new cards to affect. Continuous abilities are always processed first on a Deployment Step, in the order in which they appeared.

Triggered Abilities

This denotes any ability that needs to meet a condition before activation. [Deploy] effects are classified as triggered abilities as they only activate when triggered by being played during the Deployment Step. Most card text abbreviations are considered triggered abilities, with few exceptions.

Triggered abilities are always applied after continuous abilities are processed. If multiple triggered abilities are activated simulanteously, the abilities of the player whose turn it is takes priority.

Counter and Rune Abilities

Counter and Rune abilities, described in detail below, differ from the above as they are played outside the normal standards of the Deployment Step. Counter abilities can be activated from the hand at any time should conditions be met. Rune abilities, meanwhile, replace the Deployment Step entirely.

Active abbreviations

Betrayal

Betrayal (「裏」). A card with this conditional can ignore the Unique Rule. If you play a character with this conditional, while a character of the same name is already in play by your opponent, you discard the character of the same name that was in play previously and play your card.

Counter

Counter (「対」). With this conditional, you can use this card's ability when it is in your hand or on the field. The owner of this card is able to select whether or not to use the ability at any point it meets the conditions stated on the card.

Deploy

Deploy (「出」) designates that the ability listed on the card will activate when it is played from your hand, deck, or discard pile onto a Mission or Facilities card that is not yet cleared.

Ride On

(「協・R」) An upgraded version of the Unite conditional. It is used for mount characters, such as Feather. The character cards involved can not be targetted by opponent abilities. This effect remains until one of the cards involved in removed from play. This abbreviation was added in Card Stories Chapter II, which was based off of Suikoden III, which introduced mountable characters.

Rune

(「紋」) During a battle on a Mission or Facilities card instead of a Deployment Step, the player can select to use this conditional ability. The owner of this card is able to select whether or not to use the conditional ability. After using go to the Clear Decision Step. In addition, this ability can only be used once per turn per character. This conditional was added in Card Stories Chapter II and is unrelated to the Rune icon attribute.

Stationed

Stationed (「駐」). After completing a Mission or Facilities card, this card's effect is triggered if you choose this card to be stationed on the cleared Mission or Facilities card. Some Stationed effects are continuous while others are resolved immediately.

Support

Support ([S]). You can play a character with this abbreviation alongside a new Mission, other than a Duel mission. Characters dispatched through this ability are designated "support characters" and their ability will activate. In this support role, their stats make no contribution to the Clear Decision Step. This conditional was added in Card Stories Chapter II.

Unite

Unite (「協」). When you have dispatched a character to a Mission or Facilities, you can dispatch a card that shares this conditional with it to the same mission. Still, you must obey the play rules during this time. The owner of the card may choose whether to take advantage of this conditional or not. In addition, taking advantage of this conditional ends your play turn.

Defunct abbreviations

Continue「継」

This designates that the card's ability will continuously apply while the card remains in play. No card ever used this conditional, so it was removed for Card Stories Chapter II.

Optional

Optional (「選」) The player has the choice whether to activate this ability or not. This gives the player more control than the Deploy ability, which is mandatory. This abbreviation was removed from Card Stories Chapter II, with the optional ability stated in the text instead.

Optional Deploy

Optional Deploy (「出」「選」). This is an optional ability that can be activated when the card is played from your hand, deck, or discard pile onto a Mission or Facilities card that is not yet cleared. This abbreviation was removed from Card Stories Chapter II, with most cards becoming Deploy cards with the optional ability stated in the text instead.

Resolve 「解」

This is an ability that activated once a Mission or Facilities card has been cleared. No card ever used this conditional, so it was removed for Card Stories Chapter II.
