Rein Penenberg (リイン・ベンネンバーグ, Rīn Bennenbāgu) is an antagonist in Genso Suikogaiden Vol.1. He is a vampire, hundreds of years old, and the former lover and confidant of Sierra Mikain.
History
Rein Penenberg was a knight from an unknown land, hailing from a respected family. At some point found himself wounded, his injuries caused in a futile attempt to protect the woman he served.
Near death, he chanced upon Sierra Mikain's cabin. Gravely injured and seeking refuge, he met Sierra, who, following her encounter with the Moon Rune, transformed Rein into the first sired vampire.
He would remain with Sierra for a short time afterwards. The reasons for his subsequent departure remained a mystery, though some speculated it was driven by a desire for revenge against those who had wronged him and his charge.
After a period of absence, Rein returned, and he and Sierra formed a close bond, becoming companions in their newfound immortal existence. Together, they established the Blue Moon Village, alongside other individuals who sought solace within the forest, yearning to escape their past lives. Their existence remained peaceful until Neclord's theft of the Moon Rune disrupted their tranquility.
Contrary to some of his vampire counterparts, Rein chose to sustain himself by feeding on humans rather than accepting a painful death. Sierra, the one responsible for his vampiric existence, vowed to put an end to his actions and of those like him.
Rein's life endured until the time of the Dunan Unification War when Nash Latkje and Sierra stumbled upon his mansion in the Dunan region. At this point, Rein had fully embraced his vampire nature, seeing himself as superior to humans.
In a clever ruse, he deceived Sierra into believing she had mortally wounded him, but instead, he seized the opportunity to strengthen himself by feeding on her, thereby increasing his power. Although Nash could not harm him, he managed to distract Rein long enough for Sierra to break free from his grasp, ultimately leading to Rein's destruction through her Hymn of Severance, putting an end to his existence.
