Fishing (魚釣り, Sakanatsuri) is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fishing techniques include spearing, netting, angling, and trapping. It is a mini-game in several titles of the Suikoden series.

Information

During the Dunan Unification War, Yam Koo had a fishing spot at the New State Army Headquarters on Lake Dunan. He would allow the hero to use the spot for 100 potch per cast (to cover bait costs).

Depending on the type of fish caught, Yam Koo could buy them or they could be used as ingredients for Hai Yo's restaurant. If one were unlucky, they might end up reeling in an old boot instead.

Gameplay (Suikoden II)

Upon starting the fishing minigame, fish can begin hooking after 5 seconds. If nothing bites the hook by 60 seconds, then the hero will fall asleep and no fish can hook anymore.

Once a fish is hooked, the player must match the green pair (the player's pulling power) with the yellow box (the fish's pulling power.) If the player's pulling power is within the fish's pulling power box, then the fish is reeled in. If it's outside, the fish moves away. Once a fish is reeled in all the way then they are caught.

The hero's stats play a large role in fishing. If one is having trouble reeling fish in, they may want to wait until their hero is higher level.

  • Strength helps increase the player's pulling power, and also determines how fast fish are reeled in.
  • Dexterity determines the size of the fish's pulling power box, giving the player more leeway.

Catching Fish

Fish / Item Base Weight Weight Variability Base Price Hook Chance (per second) Available Time on Line Requirement
Boot 1.0kg +/- 0.25kg 10 potch 0.6% 5 to 60 seconds
Squid 2.0kg +/- 0.5kg 50 potch 2.4% 5 to 45 seconds
Stonefish 3.5kg +/- 1.0kg 300 potch 1.8% 5 to 30 seconds
Blowfish 4.0kg +/- 1.25kg 900 potch 1.8% 5 to 20 seconds
Whitefish 1.5kg +/- 0.25kg 200 potch 3.0% 5 to 30 seconds
Shellfish 3.0kg +/- 1.0kg 600 potch 3.0% 5 to 40 seconds Caught 1 Whitefish
Shrimp 2.0kg +/- 0.5kg 1200 potch 2.6% 5 to 50 seconds Caught 2 Shellfish
Salmon 7.5kg +/- 2.5kg 4500 potch 1.8% 5 to 60 seconds Caught 2 Shrimp

To determine the potch value of a fish, use the following formula:

Price = Base Price x (Weight - Base Weight) / (Variance x 2)
