When the young Shapur wanted to become a knight, he would hear rumors of Bamshard's history and begged to train under him. Bamshad first tried to warn him off, Shapur's pagan background being a large obstacle, but was impressed by the youth's determination.
Bamshard trained him in pole fighting for the next year. When Shapur passed his entrance exam to become a knight apprentice, Bamshard disappeared without saying farewell, confident in the path that his young charge chose.
