Genso Suikoden IV: 1 (幻想水滸伝IV ⟨上⟩, Gensō Suikoden IV Jō) is a book published by MediaWorks in 2005.
It is the first part of a three-part light novelization of the events of Suikoden IV. It covers the events of the game from the beginning to the escape of the Headquarters Ship and the occupation of the Kingdom of Obel.
This was the first work to refer to the hero of Suikoden IV as Razro (alt. Razro, or Lazlo), a name that would be used in many subsequent publications and the fandom at large for the character.
Summary
On the island of Razril, a territory of the Dukedom of Gaien, a grand festival is underway to celebrate the birth of a new generation of knights. Among them is Razro, who washed ashore on the island fifteen years ago. Once an orphan, he was taken in by the lord of the land and grew up alongside the lord’s son, Snowe. Now, at last, the two of them have earned their knighthood together.
Their first mission as knights is to escort a large merchant vessel, a duty that should have been dull and uneventful. But out at sea, the feared and merciless pirate Brandeau suddenly appears before their ship…
Set upon the vast ocean, this is the first novelization of the latest entry in the Suikoden series, Suikoden IV!

Differences from the game
- Snowe does not attend the graduation party with the others, nor does he get to see the fireworks. He has to attended a gathering organized by his father.
- There are no incidents at the Kindling Ritual such as the back alley kidnapping the player can foil in the game.
- Jewel and Tal are the friends who sneak aboard Lazlo's exile ship. Lazlo initially fears they blamed him when only Paula and Keneth visit him prior to his exile.
- Chiepoo is wounded by the Speckled Rays, taking him out of action for several chapters. This starts a short arc where Yu refuses to treat Chiepoo without payment, Chadli sells the group medicine in Obel, and Louise allows them to stay at her inn.
- Although Ornan still has a crush on Louise, there's no hints of a mysterious past. Instead he is a more humorous character due to his Waking Rune causing him to constantly nod off in inappropriate situations.
- Though charged with gathering recruits for Lino En Kuldes, the group's sailing the Island Nations is initially more motivated about finding Lilin's sisters.
- Iluya Island gets more focus, showing the lives of its residents before its destruction as well as the efforts of its survivors in the aftermath.
- Perrault is recruited to lead relief efforts to Iluya, though he is still a journalist.
- Cedric aids in the battle against Akaghi and Mizuki. Although he cannot fight physically, his extreme speed allows him to weave through the battle, throwing the assailants off-balance.
