Rokkaku Hamlet (ロッカクの里, Rokkaku no Mura) is a hamlet which is mentioned in Suikoden but first appears in Suikoden II. It is a secretive hamlet inhabited by ninja.

Information

Located off the forest paths between Gregminster and Banner Village, the secluded Rokkaku traditionally avoided being ruled by other nations.

Unmarked on maps, the village could only be reached by a secret passage through the woods unknown to most people. In addition, those who managed to somehow stumble across the settlement would be taken back to the forest path in an instant by ninjutsu.

Rokkaku had resisted attempts by the Scarlet Moon Empire to exert influence for many years. These attempts continued to grow in intensity during the Gate Rune War.

Chancellor Hanzo's final rejection of an order to surrender by a Scarlet Moon envoy would see the hamlet razed by Teo McDohl during the Gate Rune War. The ninja Kasumi was ordered to report the carnage to the Toran Liberation Army and joined the rebel forces for the remainder of the war.

Following the last battle, it was revealed by Chief Hanzo that there were survivors. The majority of non-combatants had hidden in the City-States of Jowston during this time.

Hanzo and Kasumi returned to Rokkaku following the Gate Rune War. Over the next three years, the people of Rokkaku would come together to rebuild their village.

During the Dunan Unification War, the New Alliance Army would visit the hamlet. Hanzo would have Mondo and Sasuke join the New Alliance Army as a token of alliance.

Culture

The ninja of Rokkaku practiced a hierarchical culture influenced by talent in ninja arts as well as bloodline. The village itself was headed by a Chief and Vice-Chief.

Chūnin were middle-ranked ninja, while jōnin were higher-class ninja. Though jōnin were generally considered more talented ninja, a highly skilled chūnin may find themselves unable to advance due to their bloodline.

Children between the ages of 4 and 12 were regarded as "swallows" and resides together in the swallow manor in the village. There they lived together and practiced ninja training.

Rokkaku children of jōnin ninja traditionally were not aware of their parentage after becoming swallows, as such parents generally had no familial relationship with their children. They were also not allowed to leave the village until they graduated as fully-fledged ninja.

That is not to say strict segregation was always in place. The rebuilding of Rokkaku following the Gate Rune War, for example, involved every resident of the village, regardless of rank and age.
