—  Viktor

Viktor is an easy-going mercenary who joined the Toran Liberation Army led by Odessa Silverberg. Viktor encountered Tir McDohl and his party in Gregminster at Marie's inn after they became fugitives; Viktor sensed the McDohl party would allow him to leave Marie's inn without needing to pay his bill[1]. Recognizing Tir[2], Viktor agreed to help Tir and his party flee Gregminster provided they meet a friend of his in Lenankamp[3].

Once the group arrived in Lenankamp, Viktor departed, arriving at the Toran Liberation Army's hideout while Tir and his party arrived at the Keyaki inn. During the middle of the night, Scarlet Moon Empire soldiers came to the inn looking for fugitives. Tir McDohl and his party looked for a way out, but were unable to find one until Odessa Silverberg came to rescue them, recognizing them from Viktor's description[4]. Although Viktor had not planned to introduce Tir McDohl to Odessa so early, once he met her Viktor had little choice[5] but to argue that Tir McDohl and his party would make great additions for the Toran Liberation Army[6]. Viktor aided Tir in freeing Varkas and Sydonia and helped Tir and Odessa deliver the plans for the Fire Spear to Sarady.

When they returned to Lenankamp, Odessa was mortally wounded in the attack on the Toran Liberation Army's secret hideout under the Keyaki inn. In accordance with her last requests, they threw her body into the sewers below Lenankamp and traveled to Seika in order to meet a man named Mathiu. When they met Mathiu, he suggested that Tir become the leader of the Toran Liberation Army. Viktor continued to serve in the Toran Liberation Army under Tir McDohl for much of the war. During the Toran Liberation Army's assault on the Kunan region, Viktor suggested that Gremio stay behind, following a hunch of his[7]. Viktor's hunch proved to be accurate when Gremio was killed during the Toran Liberation Army's infiltration of Soniere Prison. Following Gremio's death, Viktor took Gremio's axe with them, planning to give it to Tir in the future[8]. Deeply affected by Gremio's death, Viktor vowed to avenge Gremio's death[9] and did not pause when Milich revealed that he had a Conqueror Rune[10]. When Tir McDohl made the decision to pardon Milich, Viktor could not understand Tir's decision[11].

When the Toran Liberation Army advanced into Lorimar, Viktor unexpectedly came face to face with an old enemy, Neclord, the magistrate of Lorimar. Neclord had once destroyed Viktor's hometown, North Window, by turning all the villagers into zombies, including Viktor's own family[12]. The destruction of North Window started Viktor's journey[13], and he felt it could only end when he killed Neclord[14].

In order to do so, Viktor knew they needed a special weapon in order to harm Neclord[15]. After a tip from Zorak, Viktor and Tir McDohl travelled with the rest of their party to Qlon Temple, where they entered the Cave of the Past. The Star Dragon Sword, awakened by Viktor, agreed to help him on his mission[16]. The next morning, Viktor, Tir, Cleo, and Hix, along with the their party, made their way to the top of Neclord's Castle in order to prevent Neclord's marriage to Tengaar. Bearing the Star Dragon Sword, Viktor attacked Neclord, asking if he remembered North Window[17], vowing to make sure that Neclord would never waste his breath again[18].

Raising the Star Dragon Sword, Viktor defeated Neclord, claiming that this was where his journey ended[19]. Following Neclord's defeat, Viktor left the Toran Liberation Army briefly in order to return to North Window[20] and share the news of Neclord's defeat at his family's grave[21].

On his way to return to the Toran Liberation Army, Viktor briefly visited the noble Warren, but Kasim Hazil and his men caught and quickly imprisoned them in Moravia. Taggart, a servant of Warren, managed to escape, and spread word of Viktor and Warren's imprisonment to the Toran Liberation Army, who quickly launched a rescue effort. Viktor never doubted that the Toran Liberation Army would come to rescue him and chided Tir for making him wait[22][23]. Prior to the Battle at Floating Fortress Shasarazade, Viktor returned Gremio's axe to Tir, urging Tir to go on for all the soldiers who believed in a better future[24]. Viktor helped Tir to close the floodgates at Shasarazade in order to light it on fire[25] and saved General Sonya Shulen from committing suicide[26].

Following the last battle, Viktor noted that he and Tir had returned to Gregminster in far different circumstances from when they had left it[27]. Viktor witnessed Barbarosa's leap from the Floating Garden along with Windy, noting after he fell that that was the end of the Emperor[28]. As the Toran Liberation Army made their way out of Gregminster Palace, Viktor and Flik stayed behind in order to protect Tir from the Scarlet Moon Empire soldiers who wanted to gain revenge for Emperor Barbarosa's apparent death.

Following the end of the Gate Rune War, Viktor was declared missing in action[29].

Personality and Traits

A strong and muscular man, Viktor was said to resemble a bear[30].

Viktor is an easy-going and friendly personality. As Odessa Silverberg noted, Viktor was likely to drag anyone who he liked into the Toran Liberation Army[31]. Viktor also had a great sense of a loyalty. Even following Odessa's death, Viktor was quick to defend her[32]. Viktor strove to defend Tir McDohl as well, even risking his life in Gregminster Palace to keep Tir safe[33].

Viktor felt a great sense of guilt following Odessa's death, especially when confronted by Flik. Viktor begged Flik for forgiveness[34], but Flik did not feel that Odessa's death had been Viktor's fault.

Due to his travels and experiences, Viktor could sometimes get hunches about the future[35]. He had a feeling that Gremio should not accompany Tir to the Kunan region and was proved correct when Gremio was killed in Soniere Prison. Viktor tried desperately to convince Gremio not to sacrifice himself[36][37]. An occasionally rash man, Viktor refused to listen to Milich Oppenheimer's admission that he held a Conqueror Rune and could not understand Tir's decision to pardon Milich Oppenheimer for killing Gremio[38].

Viktor also was somewhat of a rogue. Viktor ran out on his bill after eating at Marie's Inn[39], stole Gremio's money in order to leave Gregminster[40], lit Grady's mansion on fire in an attempt to distract Grady's guards[41] and was more comfortable with stealing Kirinji than the more scrupulous Gremio[42]. Gremio tried to discourage Tir from taking after Viktor[43] and understood why someone could call Viktor a deliquent[44].

Despite his rogue behavior, however, Viktor had a clear sense of morality. When Ain Gide refused to give way to the Toran Liberation Army, Viktor was hesitant to fight him[45]. After Ain Gide was killed in battle, Viktor commented that although Ain Gide had been wrong, his actions had been priceless[46]. Viktor was also instrumental in saving a suicidal Sonya Shulen from casting herself into the fires of Shasarazade[47].

Despite his easy going personality, Viktor held a deep emnity for the vampire Neclord and never forgave him for ruining North Window[48] and vowed to destroy him with his own hands[49].
