Suikoden III: The Successor of Fate 9 (幻想水滸伝III -運命の継承者- 9, Gensōsuikoden III Unmei no Keishō-sha 9) is the ninth volume of the licensed manga adaptation of Suikoden III published by Media Factory between 2002 and 2006.

This volume would be published by Tokyopop in the United States, with an extra two pages summarizing the story thus far.

The ninth volume covers much of the game's Chapter 5 with some significant differences as well as weaving the burgeoning alliance aspects of Chapter 4.

Overview

Franz is sentenced to death for his supposed collaboration with the Fire Bringer. Albert reports that the route to the Ceremonial Site has been found, much to Luc's satisfaction. Queen manages to persuade Franz's colleagues to rescue him and turn against Harmonia.

The Harmonian Army begin their advance and fight well against the Grasslanders but find themselves stymied by the more heavily armored Zexen Knights, until Sarah blocks them with the power of the True Earth Rune. The Lizard Clan then managed to turn the tide of battle with a surprise attack but quickly lose the advantage once Luc beginnings summoning monsters to the battlefield.

Futch attempts to strike at Luc from the skies but is easily brought to earth by the power of the True Wind Rune. Franz and the rest of the Le Buque soldiers fly for home, unwilling to be sacrificed in such a casual manner by their commander. Hugo attempts to attack Luc but is easily stopped.

Luc shares his vision of the Gray World with Hugo, but does not convince him of the necessity of his plans. The Zexen Knights finally break through but it is too late. The Great Hollow falls to Harmonia and the Grassland forces withdraw to Budehuc Castle, while the Zexen army makes for Brass Castle.

At Budehuc Castle, Thomas attempts the bridge the gap between Zexeners and the Grasslanders. He declares all violence within Budehuc's walls forbidden and has its people hand over their weaponry. Thomas and Cecile then throw a festival to try and bring the two groups together, with mixed results. At Brass Castle, Chris receives news that makes her head for Budehuc immediately.

Lilly Pendragon arrives at Budehuc Castle, searching for the Flame Champion. She takes in the sights of the festival, including a reenactment of the defeat of Neclord in her home town some 15 years prior, but is no closer to finding the elusive figure, though she learns from Kidd that a mysterious figure is apparently staying in a hidden room. The next day, the battered Grassland forces arrive at the castle.

As everyone recuperates, Caesar shares Hugo the story of his family and his falling out with Albert. Hugo ruminates that it feels like the Harmonian forces aren't all that interested in conquering the region. The Zexen Knights finally arrive and, along with the Grassland leaders, are brought into the hidden room to meet Thomas' secret guest: Sasarai. Though everyone is stunned, he asks the group to listen to his tale.

Differences from the game

  • The events concerning Geddoe and Le Buque continue in an adapted form. This time it is Queen who makes the argument for Le Buque to resist Harmonian control.
  • The Great Hollow does not fall to the Harmonian Army in the game. Here it is portrayed as being vital to secure a route to the Ceremonial Site.
  • Luc shows Hugo a vision of the Gray World. In the game, this does not happen until immediately prior to the final boss battle.
  • In the game, Lilly plays a supporting role in Hugo's Chapter 2. Here, she doesn't know Hugo at all, Chris being the one person she's familiar with.
  • By this point in the game, the True Water Rune has been taken by the Destroyers. Here, Chris still bears the rune.
  • Sasarai is hidden at Budehuc Castle while he convalesces. In the game, he appears during the Harmonian attack on Brass Castle, declaring his intent to fight alongside the Fire Bringer.
  • In the battle at Brass Castle not depicted in this volume, Luc's plan for the True Runes are revealed. Here they remain a mystery, though Sasarai will begin explaining in the situation in the next volume.
