Suikoden III: The Successor of Fate 10 (幻想水滸伝III -運命の継承者- 10, Gensōsuikoden III Unmei no Keishō-sha 10) is the tenth volume of the licensed manga adaptation of Suikoden III published by Media Factory between 2002 and 2006.

This volume would be published by Tokyopop in the United States, with an extra two pages summarizing the story thus far.

The tenth volume covers much of the game's Chapter 5.

Overview

The Harmonian Army's morale begins to falter as it becomes clear that Luc's goals are different from their appointed mission. Meanwhile, an ultimatum is sent to Budehuc Castle: hand over the True Runes or be destroyed.

The Fire Bringer prepare for battle as they ruminate over Sasarai's explanation of Luc's goals, though Caesar rejects that Luc's motive is revenge. If it were, Albert would have no reason to assist him. Ernie's discovery of the power of the Ceremonial Site to cause destruction shakes Caesar deeply and he angrily storms out.

Hugo struggles to stay attached to reality, afflicted by the True Fire Rune as well as the words of Luc. Meanwhile, Duke and Geddoe's battered teams slowly make for Budehuc Castle, having survived their onslaught. As they arrive, Hugo's rune causes an explosion. Geddoe confronts Hugo, attempting to have him snap out of his fugue state, but privately lamenting the pressure the lad is under.

Meeting Sasarai, Geddoe negotiates the independence of the Grasslands in exchange for their help is restoring his position. Jeane reveals that Geddoe and Sasarai are both in dire straits due to the loss of their runes. Afterwards, the leaders prepare to defend Budehuc Castle only to discover Hugo has gone missing.

Caesar finds Hugo resting on a hillside and confronts him for abandoning the tactician who swore to be at his side. Their discussion is interrupted by a Chimera, though Hugo easily defeats it. Meanwhile, orders come from Crystal Valley recalling Luc. Realizing time is running out, the messenger is killed and the Destroyers reveal the Ceremonial Site, hidden under mountains all this time.

Realizing their battle will now become an offensive one, the Fire Bringer prepare to march to the Ceremonial Site. Geddoe, Chris, and Hugo rally the troops spirits as they begin their advance just as the Le Buque forces arrive to join them. The battle begins in the Fire Bringers favor but this turns out to be a feint and Sarah uses her teleport magic to spirit Hugo away.

The Zexen Knights ponder marching out, unsure about risking Chris' True Water Rune but are convinced to do so on their honor. At the Ceremonial Site, Hugo awakens to see Lulu standing in front of him and tries to follow him. Meanwhile, Geddoe's party makes their way to the site, knowing the way from his past. He is cut off from the others and finds himself face-to-face with his old friend, the Flame Champion.

The Flame Champion attempts to convince Geddoe of the futility of his actions but Geddoe strikes him, knowing that the figure before him is a fraud. Yuber reveals his true identity and the two battle. Geddoe is easily overpowered but when Yuber stops to gloat once more, Geddoe manages to pierce him with his sword, forcing the figure in black to retreat, and recovering the power of his True Lightning Rune.

As the Zexen Knights find their way to the Ceremonial Site, Chris is now confronted, by none other than her father: Wyatt Lightfellow.

Differences from the game

  • Luc's plan for the True Runes are still not revealed in full, though it is learned that he likely plans to use the Ceremonial Site in some destructive manner.
  • Hugo's True Fire Rune is portrayed as much more oppressive and dangerous in the manga as opposed to the game where he has little trouble controlling it. Hugo also does not abscond from the castle with Caesar needing to bring him back.
  • Queen returns with Franz and the other Le Buque forces in time for the final battle. In the game, Geddoe would bring the Le Buque mantor trainers on board earlier than this.
  • In the game, four parties enter the Ceremonial Site to head for each of the four rune platforms used to destroy the rune at the fifth, with the goal of reclaiming the runes to prevent the device from being used. In this volume, Hugo is taken by force to the Ceremonial Site and the others enter in an attempt to rescue him specifically.
  • The Destroyers do not take the forms of people connected to Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe in the game. They are confronted normally, though the pairings are the same (Yuber for Geddoe, Sarah for Chris, and Luc for Hugo).
