Gremio (グレミオ, Guremio) is a supporting character in Suikoden who makes a cameo in Suikoden II. A member of the McDohl household, Gremio is the protector of Tir McDohl.
Biography

A skilled fighter, Gremio is the protector of Tir McDohl. During the War of Succession, Gremio was a soldier in Teo McDohl's unit. Teo McDohl earned Gremio's eternal loyalty after Teo saved his life in the midst of a battle. Following the Succession War, Gremio became a member of the McDohl household, helping to raise Teo McDohl's son, Tir McDohl, since the time that Tir was a baby[1]. A good cook, Gremio also often made the meals in the McDohl household[2].
When Tir was a child, he was kidnapped by bandits hired by Geil Rugner in order to delay and stop Teo McDohl. Gremio rescued the young Tir, slaying the bandit kidnappers with his axe. After he rescued Tir, Gremio engraved the words, "I will always protect young master," onto his axe, giving it the name "Axe of the Oath[3]."
As Tir grew, Gremio continued to serve as his protector, accompanying Tir on his missions with the Imperial Guard, watching over him per Teo's wishes[4]. When Ted, another member of the McDohl household, was found unconscious by Gremio, Tir, Cleo, and Pahn, Gremio was second to find him and helped place Ted into a bed[5]. Though Pahn wanted to turn Ted into the authorities, Gremio defended Ted, insisting that there was some mistake and that Ted was a good person[6]. When Pahn turned Ted over to the authorities, Gremio stood his ground, refusing to allow Kraze to take Ted[7], appalled at the idea of leaving Ted until Ted asked that Tir, Gremio, and Cleo escape while the Imperial Guard still thought that Ted held the Rune of Life and Death.
Now fugitives, Gremio once again showed his resolve to protect Tir during a close call while hiding in Marie's Inn; when ambushed by two Scarlet Moon Empire soldiers, Gremio asked Tir to escape while he and Cleo held off the soldiers[8]. This proved unnecessary as Viktor interceded between the Scarlet Moon Empire soldiers and Tir and his party and promised Tir and the others that he could get them out of Gregminster. With little choice, Gremio left Gregminster along with Cleo, Tir, and Viktor, who used some of Gremio's money in order to bribe their way out of Gregminster[9].
Upon arriving in Lenankamp and meeting members of the Toran Liberation Army, Gremio showed hesitated at joining the rebels, preferring to remain with the Scarlet Moon Empire[10][11]. However, even Gremio could not stand by at the crimes of Grady and joined forces with the Toran Liberation Army, feeling that undoing Grady's wrongs could only be of benefit to the Scarlet Moon Empire and that he would follow Tir's orders[12].
Although he wished to return to the Scarlet Moon Empire[13], he agreed to join the Toran Liberation Army, following Tir in in his decisions as his loyalty to Tir outweighed his loyalty to the Scarlet Moon Empire. Gremio continued to try to protect Tir's life. During the Toran Liberation Army's attempt to free Liukan from Soniere Prison, Milich Oppenheimer smashed a vial of the man-eating Spores of Agony in order to stop the Toran Liberation Army from freeing Liukan. Gremio quickly pushed the other Toran Liberation Army members out of the room and shut himself in the room with the spores, sacrificing his life for Tir and his party. In his last words, Gremio told Tir how proud he was of him for growing into such a responsible, mature young leader[14].
Prior to the end of the Gate Rune War, Gremio was miraculously restored to life by Leknaat using the power of the 108 Stars and the back half of the Gate Rune[15]. Reborn, Gremio resumed his place in the Toran Liberation Army. Following the fall of the Scarlet Moon Empire and the end of the Toran Liberation War, Gremio, ever loyal, continued to follow Tir after Tir left the Scarlet Moon Empire[16].
