Schtolteheim Reinbach III (シュトルテハイム・ラインバッハ3世, Shutorutehaimu Rainbahha 3-sei), also known simply as Reinbach, is a supporting character in Suikoden IV and Suikoden Tactics. Reinbach is the aristocratic son of the lord of Middleport, Schtolteheim Reinbach II.

History

He is a wonderful man. I would place him second to myself.

—  Schtolteheim Reinbach III
Reinbach is a firm believer in showing, not telling.

Reinbach was the scion of Middleport, being the son of the town's lord, Schtolteheim Reinbach II. He behaved much like a typical member of the aristocracy, wearing overly flamboyant clothing and frequently breaking into histrionics.

Although he had a fondness for those who share his aesthetic sense, he also has a stubborn side, shown when he disassociated himself with his father due to the latter's shady business deals concerning Rune Cannon components as, unlike his father, Reinbach III possessed a pure and noble heart.

When Reinbach discovered the actions of his father, he would leave his household, accompanied by his faithful servant Micky before being offered a place on the Headquarters Ship by its leader. Although eager to aid the Allied Forces, he suffered from extreme seasickness, causing him to spend most of his time on ship laying down.

Sally Forth? That's my fave newspaper comic!

Following the Island Liberation War, Reinbach reconciled with his father and succeeded his father, taking up the mantle of Lord of Middleport. Some years later, he would encounter Kyril through their mutual use of the Quest Guild where, upon learning of Kyril's journey to destroy rune cannons, he would accompany the youth's party on their quest, along with his good friend Charlemagne.

A biography on Reinbach by Micky, titled The Rose Swordsman, would enshrine Reinbach as a noble hero into posterity. In future generations, his name would be used as an alias on several occasions, including by Viktor during the Gate Rune War as he tried to pass through the Fortress of Kwaba undetected.

Confessions

Confession
Keen You have done well by coming here. In this room, you may confess what is in your heart and accept proper judgement.
Reinbach III Ah, who could possibly understand the things I agonize about? Still, I shall take this a good opportunity to reflect upon myself. Now, carry on...
Keen Would you secretly inform me about anyone onboard this ship who you think is causing problems?
Reinbach III Let's see...Micky is...not taking very good care of me. It is troubling...He came aboard this ship with promises of caring for me...It is deplorable how he has seemingly broke that promise.
Keen Then, would you tell me what you think of the Hero?
Reinbach III He is a wonderful man. I would place him second to myself.
Keen Finally, quietly confess the things you wish to atone for, or all the things that you are thankful for.
Reinbach III I spend everyday reflecting upon myself in contrition. I spend my time diligently, so as not to trouble anyone else. Therefore, I would never need to apologize! You see?
Forgiven
Reinbach III Splendid...This is the right result.
Punished
Reinbach III ...!!...!!...!! What is the meaning of this? This...What does this mean?!

Name and Weapon

Schtolte is derived from the Middle Low German word stolt, meaning proud, or magnificent. The suffix -heim means home. Reinbach, meanwhile, can be translated to clear stream.

Reinbach's name has been a running gag in the series and was often used by characters during undercover missions:

His weapon names Rosage, Marguerite and Orchidees are identical to those of Milich Oppenheimer in Suikoden.

Music

Reinbach Theme

Reinbach's theme in Suikoden IV is the aptly named "Reinbach Theme". It is song 27 on disc 1 of the official Genso Suikoden IV Original Soundtrack. Despite the different name, the song is indeed a rearrange of "Theme of Narcissism", which was present in previous games.

In Suikoden Tactics, Reinbach's theme is again "Theme of Narcissism", with a new arrangement for the game. It is song 25 on disc 1 of the Rhapsodia Original Soundtrack.

Trivia

  • Suikoden V is the only main title that does not feature a Reinbach gag.
