The Merchants (あきんど, Akindo) are a military unit in Suikoden.
Information
The merchants were a special operations unit of the Toran Liberation Army, led by Kun To and backed by Chandler and Chapman. This group would attempt to persuade Imperial Army soldiers to switch sides on the field of battle through the use of their excellent public speaking and negotiation skills.
Gameplay
Merchants have a 25% chance to fail, 25% to convert up to 1/8 of the enemy soldiers, and 50% chance to convert up to 1/4 of the enemy soldiers.
Note that the player's soldier count cannot exceed the maximum soldier count, which is set at the beginning of battle. This means that using merchants while at full soldier count, i.e., on the first turn, will always result in a failure.
A normal success will convert 1/8 of the enemy's soldiers, up to the maximum soldier count. Likewise, a great success will convert 1/4 of the enemy's soldiers, up to the maximum soldier count.
