Windy (ウィンディ, Windi) is a main antagonist in Suikoden. The former Scarlet Moon Empire Court Magician, Windy used her influence and her magic to hunt for the Rune of Life and Death.

Windy is a powerful magician and the last known owner of the front half of the Gate Rune. Windy gained the rune during an attack by the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia on the Clan of the Gate. Windy and her clan sister, Leknaat, divided the rune, each taking half and escaping using the Gate Rune's powers[1]. Following this attack, Windy desired to take revenge upon the world[2], and to that end, began to seek a second True Rune[3], devising a method that would allow her to equip more than one True Rune, a previously unknown feat. At first, Windy went after Leknaat's half of the Gate Rune[4], but after this was unsuccessful, she soon set her sights on a new target, the Rune of Life and Death[5]. To that end, Windy, along with her subordinates, Yuber and Neclord, hunted the Rune of Life and Death throughout the world, destroying Lycanthrope Village and the Village of the Hidden Rune[6] in the process.
Windy's hunt for the Soul Eater lasted for over 300 years. In this time, Windy became the Court Magician of the Scarlet Moon Empire. The Emperor, Barbarosa Rugner, fell in love with Windy[7] and Windy, using this love to her advantage, used her magic to manipulate the empire, giving Conqueror Runes to the Five Great Generals and Barbarosa to keep them within her control. At this time, she also finally tracked down Ted and quickly attempted to get the Soul Eater from him[8]. This proved unsuccessful, as Ted managed to escape and pass the rune to his friend, Tir McDohl.
As the Gate Rune War began, Windy's Conqueror Runes proved ineffective, as Kwanda Rosman and Milich Oppenheimer, the only Great Generals to use them, both broke free of the rune's control as their runes melted and returned to normal. Though Windy never led a battle, she did aid the Scarlet Moon Empire's war efforts by putting the Dragon Knight's Dragons to sleep[9] and summoning monsters to bolster Gregminster's defences[10]. She also made attempts to gain the Soul Eater, using a Conqueror Rune on Ted[11] to make him convince Tir McDohl to give up the Rune of Life and Death. This backfired as Ted used his proximity to the Rune of Life and Death to order it to take his soul. Windy's attempt to defend Gregminster with monsters also failed, as Leknaat and Joshua Levenheit used their True Runes to send the monsters back to their own realm.
Windy made no further attempts to guard the empire. Following Barbarosa's defeat, Windy appeared before him and Tir McDohl's party and once more attempted to gain control of the Soul Eater[12]. However, the Rune rejected her, shocking Windy greatly[13]. Windy became even more upset as Barbarosa revealed he loved her[14] and that he was not under her control, as his Sovereign Rune protected him from any form of magic[15]. Taking her in his arms and bidding Tir and his companions farewell, Barbarosa jumped from the Floating Garden with Windy in his arms. The two vanished, never to be seen again, although Windy's body and her half of the Gate Rune have never been found.
Trivia
- Windy, like Barbarosa, was originally confirmed by Konami to have perished at the end of Suikoden I. That has since, however, been overturned, and their status is now listed only as "Missing in Action."
- Though the game frequently refers to Leknaat as Windy's sister, the two are clan sisters only and are officially unrelated.
