As the Gate Rune War progressed, Sanchez began to felt torn between the two sides although he would eventually decide to maintain his loyalty to the Empire. After the defeat of Sonya Shulen at the Battle at Floating Fortress Shasarazade, Sanchez waited until the Liberation Army leader had entered the fortress. Sanchez seized the opportunity, stabbing Mathiu before setting the fortress ablaze with his comrades trapped inside.

Lepant forced Sanchez to swear that he would never work with or associate with any officials of the Toran Republic. Abiding by the terms of his pardon, Sanchez entered Qlon Temple in Lorimar.
