Army battles in Suikoden are large-scale strategic conflicts between the Liberation Army and the Imperial Army, occurring at pivotal moments in the game's story. These battles are determined by military strength, where the objective is to deplete the enemy's forces to zero before they do the same to the player's army.
Gameplay Mechanics

War battles follow a rock-paper-scissors-style combat system, where three military unit types—Charge, Bow, and Magic—interact in a cycle of strengths and weaknesses. Choosing an advantageous command against the enemy's action can deal significant damage, while a poor choice may result in heavy losses. Additionally, certain "Other" commands (such as reconnaissance or special tactics) can provide strategic benefits.
Team Composition
Characters are organized into teams of up to three members, with each team able to attack once per battle. Teams with higher attack power are prioritized for dealing damage, while three-member squads tend to perform more effectively. Recruiting more allies increases the Liberation Army's total military strength, improving the chances of victory.
Strategic Advantages
Players can gain an edge by using Thief or Ninja units to uncover enemy actions, allowing them to counter with a guaranteed advantageous move. Additionally, characters with non-standard attack types (not Charge, Bow & Arrow, or Magic) contribute through unique support abilities, further influencing battle outcomes.
By carefully managing unit selection, predicting enemy tactics, and leveraging special commands, players can lead the Liberation Army to victory in these decisive conflicts.
