Tengaar' (テンガアール, Tengaāru) is a supporting character in Suikoden and Suikoden II. Tengaar is a headstrong woman from Warriors' Village who was nearly forced to marry the vampire Neclord.

Biography

Background

Tengaar is the daughter of Zorak, the leader of Warrior's Village. Tengaar grew up with Hix and eventually the two became a couple[1].

Suikoden

I'll be waiting for you, Hix.

—  Tengaar

Tengaar was kidnapped by Neclord, who planned to make her his bride. Hix and Tir McDohl set out to free her; during the battle with Neclord, Hix named his sword after Tengaar.

After being rescued, Tengaar, along with Hix, joined the Toran Liberation Army.

Following the end of the Gate Rune War, Tengaar accompanied Hix on a journey[2].

Suikoden II

Please Lord Riou. Please make Hix into a true warrior.

—  Tengaar

Tengaar and Hix eventually travelled to the City-States of Jowston in order to undergo the Test of the Unicorn in Kobold Village. However, when they arrived, they found that Kobold Village no longer practiced the ritual. The Chief of Kobold Village agreed to help Tengaar create a test for Hix after hearing that she and Hix were from Warrior's Village, the home of Clift[3]. As Tengaar pretended to be under the Curse of the Unicorn, the Chief sent Hix on a quest for items to cure her.

Once Hix had gathered all the necessary items, Tengaar and the residents of Kobold Village went into the forest to congratulate Hix. There, much to the surprise of the Kobold villagers, the unicorn Sigfried appeared before them and recognized Hix as a warrior.

Though their reason for coming to the City-States of Jowston was complete, Tengaar and Hix joined the New State Army in order to repay Riou for helping Hix[4]. Tengaar continued to remind Hix of his need to become a great warrior[5], though she felt he did not put enough effort towards that goal[6].

Following the end of the Dunan Unification War, Tengaar continued to journey with Hix[7] while waiting for him to propose[8].

Personality and Traits

Tengaar has something of a headstrong but loyal personality. Once her mind was made up, even her father Zorak found it impossible to stop her[9]. Tengaar was considered by Hix to be a nice girl, even too nice[10].

Though prone to ordering Hix around, she never left his side[11]. She frequently worried about Hix's progress as a warrior and did everything she could for Hix's sake[12]. Despite her pushiness, the two were said to be a well-balanced couple[13]. Tengaar frequently made decisions for the less decisive Hix[14][15]. Tengaar also made long-term plans for the couple, planning on marrying Hix when they returned to Warrior's Village[16].

Trivia

  • Though Tengaar's weapon in Suikoden is animated as and is named after a knife, it's actually classified as a rod in terms of attack power.
