Griffith (グリフィス, Gurifisu) is a supporting character in Suikoden. A man with a great deal of respect for his men's lives, Griffith was a soldier in the Scarlet Moon Empire Imperial Army as well as the Toran Liberation Army.

The commander of the Northern Checkpoint, Griffith is an officer who was, at the time of the Gate Rune War, under the command of Kasim Hazil[1]. Due to a plot of Mathiu Silverberg, Griffith found himself taken by surprise by a vastly larger Toran Liberation Army[2]. Seeing that there was no way to win with only the men under his control, Griffith tried to send for reinforcements from Kasim Hazil while he attempted to stall the Liberation Army[3]. Mathiu Silverberg saw through Griffith's attempts to keep the Toran Liberation Army at bay and ordered the army to attack. Griffith urged his troops to do their best to fight the Toran Liberation Army, but warned them not to waste their lives needlessly[4].
Outmatched by the larger army, Griffith quickly surrendered[5], and, to his surprise, was offered a position within the Toran Liberation Army. Griffith agreed to do so only if the Toran Liberation Army would spare his men[6]. When they consented to do so, Griffith joined, saying that it mattered little which side of the war he was fighting on so long as he was able to eat[7]. Griffith's men quickly joined the Toran Liberation Army along with him[8], which Griffith praised his men for[9].
Griffith aided the Toran Liberation Army immediately following his recruitment by aiding Mathiu Silverberg, Tir McDohl, Kasumi, and Krin to sneak into Moravia by pretending to have captured Mathiu Silverberg[10].
Griffith continued to work under the Liberation Army until the end of the war. After the Gate Rune War, Griffith retired from military service, and set up a small business in the newly-established Toran Republic[11].
Trivia
- Despite changing sides in the war, Griffith still remains a subordinate of Kasim Hazil in the Former Imperial Team unit following Kasim's recruitment.
