The Mountain Roots (岩の根, Iwa no Ne) are an organization in Genso Suikoden Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki. It is the bureaucratic core of the Holy Empire of Ionia.

The Mountain Roots as an organization is part of the regular army of the Holy Empire of Ionia. It was mainly composed of officials and other bureaucrats who served the nation. In HIY 300 it was led by Ionian Prime Minister Lugat Lugam.
Ostensibly, it is a group of civilian officials tasked with administration of the Holy Empire. Behind the scenes however the Mountain Roots also engaged in espionage through its secret operatives, the Grubs. Every clandestine act by the Yggdrasilian Throne was either concocted or at least put into action by the Mountain Roots.
It was the Mountain Roots that secretly founded and supplied the Vermilion Axe with its Teras Pharma. It was also the group that ran the Teras Pharma facilities at the House of Wisdom and Tower of Zoe. In the past they also supported research into the Yuga arts of shamanism and ninjutsu to limited success.
Regius was once a member of the Mountain Roots but left in roughly HIY 280 frustrated with how much they were kept in the dark about the mysteries of the world. In HIY 100, in a branch of the Infinity where the chains of causality were broken by the 108 Stars, Berenique Nobilious would disband the Mountain Roots before seizing power. Any timeline where the Mountain Roots fell would see many people immediately begin researching their prohibited documents.
