Biography

Suikoden

Affable fellow. Anyway, that there is Marksman Sydonia.

—  Varkas

Sydonia is the second-in-command of the Mt. Seifu Bandits, after Varkas. The Mt. Seifu bandits stole only from Scarlet Moon Empire officials[1], but in doing so drew the ire of Grady, who blamed the Mt. Seifu bandits for Rockland's inability to pay taxes[2]. When Tir McDohl and Kanaan came to investigate the Mt. Seifu bandits, Varkas told Sydonia to introduce himself, but Sydonia only asked why he should do bother doing so[3]; after commenting on Sydonia's affability, Varkas introduced Sydonia for him, calling him Marksman Sydonia[4]. The two battled with Tir McDohl and his party, but were unable to defeat them; Varkas and Sydonia were taken captive and delivered to Grady.

When the Imperial Guard left Rockland, Grady had Sydonia and Varkas strung up outside of his mansions, leaving them there to starve[5]. One of the Mt. Seifu bandits managed to travel to Lenankamp, where he met with Odessa Silverberg and the Toran Liberation Army and asked them to rescue Varkas and Sydonia[6]. Tir McDohl and his party, confessing their part in Varkas and Sydonia's capture, agreed to go rescue them, and journeyed with Viktor back to Rockland. After they successfully rescued Varkas, Varkas asked them rescue Sydonia as well[7]. However, Sydonia claimed that this would not be necessary, and used a teleportation technique to escape the ropes[8]. When Varkas asked why Sydonia had not done that earlier, Sydonia replied that he couldn't escape alone[9]. Upon meeting an enraged Grady, Sydonia commented on how he wanted to tear Grady into pieces[10], but Grady quickly retreated from the freed bandits. Varkas told Tir that should Odessa need them, Varkas and Sydonia would come to her aid[11].

After the Toran Liberation Army acquired Toran Castle, Sydonia made his way there along with Varkas in hopes of returning the favour they owed the Toran Liberation by joining them[12]. Varkas asked Sydonia to say something[13], but Sydonia simply said hello[14]. Sydonia stayed with the Toran Liberation Army throughout the war; prior to the last battle, Varkas attempted to rally their troops with Sydonia, but Sydonia merely replied, "Heh"[15].

Following the end of the Gate Rune War, Sydonia was invited to join the Toran Republic Border Guard by Varkas, but Sydonia simply disappeared[16].

Trivia

  • In the English version of Suikoden, Sydonia's ending simply says "disappears"[17], but his ending in the Japanese version lists that he was asked to join the Toran Republic Border Guards by Varkas[18].
  • Sydonia may be an in-name only reference to the demon Asmodeus, as his name is very close to "Sydonai", a Romanian word name for the demon.
  • Sydonia is the only character in Suikoden that teleports when attacking.
  • Sydonia shares the same battle sprite as Quincy; their sprite is a simple pallete swap with minor differences.
