Gateway: Characters
The Suikoden series is known for its large cast of characters. Seven games in the series focus on the 108 Stars, the characters recruitable by the player. There are also allies, antagonists, NPCs, historical persons, and entire casts of side-games as well as characters introduced in publications and manga.

This all adds up to a total of over 1,000 unique characters appearing in the series over the decades.

Featured Character
Sasarai (ササライ, Sasarai) is a minor character in Suikoden II and Genso Suikogaiden Vol.2 and a major one in Suikoden III. Sasarai is a bishop within the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia. He is also the bearer of the True Earth Rune and is loyal to Hikusaak, the High Priest of Harmonia. He has participated in several wars as a general.

In Suikoden II, Sasarai leads a unit of Harmonian soldiers in order to assist the Highland Kingdom during the Dunan Unification War. At first, he was calm and effective as an ally but he would begin to feel uneasy due to Luc's presence among the New State Army, leading to a confrontation between the two. In Suikoden III, Sasarai leads the Harmonian advance into the Grassland, playing a prominent role in the War of the Champions.

Although Sasarai is a skilled general, he is also a very kind person who dislikes violence, and he has a strong sense of justice. His subordinates place a lot of trust in him. In turn, Sasarai is loyal to Hikusaak and his convictions. He knows when to question others as well, such as when he suspected the Masked Bishop had ulterior motives for wishing to serve Hikusaak. 108 Stars
The 108 Stars, also called Starbearers and the Stars of Destiny are a recurring feature of the Suikoden series. They are the 107 allies of the player, tied together by destiny. Though bonded by fate, not all Stars are friendly or even on the same side as the player.

Nor are the 108 Stars always static. Depending on player choice, some Stars may replace others. A table of the 108 Stars in each game can be found at the 108 Stars page.
