The Gate Rune War were a series of civil uprisings that occurred in the Toran region between the Scarlet Moon Empire and the Toran Liberation Army. The Toran Liberation Army rose up in arms against the Scarlet Moon Empire in response to the corrupt state of the government.
453 saw the establishment of the Toran Liberation Army by Odessa Silverberg. The establishment of a formal movement to resist the Scarlet Moon Empire sparked more open dissension and disarray, marking the beginning of the Gate Rune War.

The Toran Liberation Army began to gain ground and recruits following their victory over Kwanda Rosman at the Battle at Pannu Yakuta Castle. The ranks of the Toran Liberation Army continued to swell as they attracted several prominent Scarlet Moon Empire commanders including Kwanda Rosman, Milich Oppenheimer, Kasim Hazil, Griffith and Sonya Shulen. Despite gathering many recruits, the Toran Liberation Army often had fewer soldiers than the Imperial Army, despite the defections the Scarlet Moon Imperial Army suffered throughout the war; the Toran Liberation Army only became comparable in force to the core of the Scarlet Moon Imperial Army prior to the Battle at Floating Fortress Shasarazade.
Odessa would fall in a surprise attack on the Liberation Army hidehout in Lenankamp. From there, the son of Teo McDohl, one of the Empire's Five Great Generals would take over the mantle of leadership. After several years, the war would end in 457 with the fall of Gregminster.

The Scarlet Moon Empire Imperial Army suffered defections from many of their most prominent commanders throughout the war. Kwanda Rosman felt that the Emperor had changed from the man he had once followed while Milich Oppenheimer and Kasim Hazil placed the blame for the changes in Emperor Barbarosa on Windy. Despite the growing power of the Scarlet Moon Empire, Emperor Barbarosa remained detached from much of the action of the war, only defending his empire following the Toran Liberation Army's victory in the last battle.
The Toran Republic would be established in the wake of the Scarlet Moon Empire's defeat.

The war was decided during the Battle of Gregminster, where the Toran Liberation Army defeated the last remnants of the Scarlet Moon Empire Imperial Army. The defeat and subsequent disappearance of Emperor Barbarosa Rugner cemented the victory of the Toran Liberation Army. The Scarlet Moon Empire was disbanded as a result of the war and the Toran Republic was founded in its stead, with Lepant elected to serve as the first President of the Toran Republic.

The war was named the Gate Rune War, due to the presence of both Gate Rune bearers, Windy and Leknaat, in the war, offering supporting to the Scarlet Moon Empire and the Toran Liberation Army respectively. Typically, it is simply called the Liberation War, or Toran Liberation War.
Although the war is regarded as a civil war, foreign intervention played a part. The City-State of Jowston inadvertently aided the Liberation Army, having been manipulated into invading Senan, a ploy Liberation Army strategist Mathiu Silverberg had concocted to force an Imperial surrender in the region.
