Kamandol (カマンドール, Kamandōru) is a supporting character in Suikoden. An alchemist by trade, Kamandol invented an engine that ran on oil.

History

I can do anything...depending on time and money.

—  Kamandol

Kamandol is an outstanding alchemist who has devoted his life to research and a follower of the theories put forward by the alchemist Dennis Toller in his work "Dialogues of Wind and Earth." He was also an excellent mechanic, as he was able to develop an engine that ran on burning oil.

Maybe the real ship they built was in their hearts.

Those around him view him as an eccentric old man. He hated to be disturbed and even had a sign on his door to ward off uninvited visitors. It is true that socializing was not something he was skilled at although he had good natured quarrels and shared drinks with Gen from time to time. It was Gen who dragged Kamandol into the Toran Liberation Army when he perceived that Kamandol's work could aid the party in navigating the Rapids of Dunan.

During the Gate Rune War, Gen and Kamandol improved their design, creating a motor that allowed for higher speeds. At Toran Castle, he would work away in the castle's laboratory day and night. Following the war, Kamandol simply resumed his alchemical studies, as preoccupied with them as ever.

Trivia

  • Kamandol's final weapon, the Rod of Hermes is a reference to the "Staff of Hermes," which is the symbol of medicine.
  • Kamandol is described in Old Book Volume 5 as a "Popular alchemist of Teien."
  • In the English-language version of Suikoden, when Kamandol is visited by Gen, he offers Gen his finest tea, but in the Japanese version, Kamandol offers Gen sake.
