Gretchen (グレッチェン, Guretchen) is a supporting character in Suikoden IV and Suikoden Tactics. Gretchen is a talented swordswoman who spends most of her time immersed in her training regimen.

Biography

Until now, I had thought there was no one who was a better swordsman than I, but everyday now, I learn that that is hardly the case.

Gretchen was a dedicated swordswoman who spent all her time training in the mountains. An absolutely scrupulous person, she had complete confidence in her sword fighting abilities.

During the Island Liberation War, she would hear rumours of the person said to be leading a resistance against the Kooluk Empire and would descend from the mountains to investigate. She would meet the leader in Razril following its liberation and would gladly join the Allied Forces.

On board the Headquarters Ship, Gretchen would serve as part of the leader's personal guard and was stationed outside his room constantly. She would harbour some frustration with Millay, whom Gretchen felt spoke only about the hero, though she was reluctant to speak of it, even in private. Her talent with a sword served the navy well and, following the war, she would go on to serve as a swordsmanship instructor at the Marines Academy in Razril.

She would later join Kyril's investigation of the Rune Cannons by command of King Lino En Kuldes. Even though she was still confident in her skills, she also showed some modesty when approached by Millay who was very impressed by her swordsmanship, saying that she still has to learn a lot of the art.

Gretchen	Well, there is Ms. Millay...Every time she opens her mouth, it's all about Sir Hero. Can we just leave it at that?
Keen	Then, would you tell me what you think of the Hero?
Gretchen	Well...I am grateful to him for allowing me to join the Headquarters Ship.
Keen	Finally, quietly confess the things you wish to atone for, or all the things that you are thankful for.
Gretchen	I am on board this ship right now. There is no joy greater than that. For that, I am truly thankful.
