HP, which can stand for Health Points or Hit Points, is a key stat in nearly every game of the Suikoden series.

Information

Every playable character and enemies in the series, save for visual novels, have a set HP. Once all HP is depleted, the character falls into the Unconscious status and must be revived, for example, by having a Sacrificial Jizo equipped. Revived characters are always given some HP back.

Most offensive attacks are designed to reduce the HP of their target. Enemies usually disappear from the battlefield when their HP reach zero, while allies remain unable to act until they are revived in some manner.

There are many abilities that restore HP, but it is mostly typically restored by healing magic or items. The Water Rune, common in many titles, is a rune that specializes in healing magic. Meanwhile, Medicine, and its more powerful variant, Mega Medicine, are common HP healing items.

The Poison status slowly depletes HP of the afflicted character each turn. Meanwhile, the Regeneration status can restore a set amount of HP each turn. Magic such as the Drain Rune, meanwhile, sucks away HP from the target and gives it to the caster.

In most games of the Suikoden series, the maximum HP for a player character caps at 999, with the number not increasing even if a level up would technically cause the number to increase past that. In the original Suikoden, however, there is no such cap and so the theoretical maximum is 1100, obtainable only by an extremely high leveled character with a high HP growth rate, such as Fu Su Lu.
