Biography

Suikoden II

But after I started cooking for these nice people, I realized something. I realized that I could help these brave folk by serving them good food...that I could ease their burdens just a little bit.

—  Hai Yo

Hai Yo is a chef who belonged to the Black Dragon Group. At one point, Hai Yo rose to the position of one of the 4 Lords of the Black Dragon Group[1] and fell in love with the daughter of Retso, Shun Min. However, Shun Min and Hai Yo realized that Jinkai, the leader of the Black Dragon Group, was after power. Shun Min stole the Blue Moon Bird recipe from Jinkai; though Shun Min was killed in the attempt, Hai Yo successfully took the recipe and left the island.

Seeking a place to hide out, Hai Yo joined the New State Army[2]. By cooking for the army, Hai Yo realized that he could help lift people from their troubles through his cooking. He couldn't hide from the Black Dragon Group forever, however; he was eventually challenged by several chefs from the group to a series of cook-offs over the recipe, including Shiki, Ryuki, Bashok, Gyukuran, Ryuko, and Retso. He eventually was challenged by Jinkai himself, and defeated him in a battle.

After defeating Jinkai, Hai Yo ripped up the Blue Moon Bird recipe. Jinkai, realizing Hai Yo was right, left Hai Yo, looking forward to how he would turn out.

Hai Yo remained with the New State Army until the end of the Dunan Unification War; following the war, he returned to Black Dragon Island to place flowers on Shun Min's grave[3].

Trivia

  • Hai Yo has two endings, depending on whether or not the player completes the cook-off minigame.
