Background
Adlai is an eccentric inventor from South Window whose experiments severely annoyed his neighbors. Adlai also travelled to Tinto where he installed an early elevator, though it was rarely used due to it being perceived as being dangerous.

Adlai met Riou while the young leader was in South Window. Adlai demanded Riou fetch him a Sacrificial Jizo, a Wooden Shield and a Wind Crystal. After fetching all three things, Riou threw the Wind Crystal in Adlai's face. He approved of Riou's standing up for himself and decided to join the New State Army and felt people should thank him for it more often.
