Ōtsuka Akio (Japanese: 大塚 明夫), born on November 24, 1959, in Tokyo, Japan[1][2], is a Japanese voice actor represented by the talent agency Mausu Promotion.[3] Best known as the Japanese voice of Snake in the Metal Gear series, he is the voice of Hou in Suikoden STAR LEAP.

Biography

The son of fellow voice actor Ōtsuka Chikao, Ōtsuka Akio began his career in the late 1980s and quickly became renowned for his deep, resonant voice, often portraying stoic heroes, commanding leaders, and villains. His breakthrough roles include the enigmatic surgeon Black Jack and the seasoned operative Batō in Ghost in the Shell.[4]

Internationally, he is best known as the Japanese voice of Solid Snake, Naked Snake/Big Boss, and Venom Snake in the Metal Gear series, a role that cemented his popularity worldwide.[5] He has also voiced major roles such as Daisuke Jigen in Lupin III, Blackbeard in One Piece, Wamuu in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Shunsui Kyōraku in Bleach, and All For One in My Hero Academia.

Ōtsuka is equally respected as a dubbing artist, serving as the official Japanese voice for several Western actors, including Steven Seagal, Nicolas Cage, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Antonio Banderas, and Dolph Lundgren.[1]

In recognition of his career, he received the Kei Tomiyama Memorial Award at the 9th Seiyū Awards in 2015.[6]
