Hans travelled all the way from the [[Zexen Federation]], far west of the [[Dunan (region)|Dunan region]] in order to open a store but upon arriving in [[Two River City]], discovered that the city already had an armourer leaving him despondent<ref>"Please here my tale! I came all the way from Zexen, far to the west, because I heard I could open a shop here. But they already have an armorer! Now what am I going to do? Just when I thought I had finally taken my first step towards being a real armorer....." - Hans ([[Suikoden II]])</ref>. Luckily, [[Hero (Suikoden II)]] happened upon the armourer in the [[New Leaf Inn]] in Two River and gave him the chance to open his own store, as part of the [[New State Army]].

Hans was described as mild-mannered<ref>"Hans is our mild-mannered armorer." - Fu Tan Chen ([[Suikoden II]])</ref> and it was revealed he did not come from a rich Zexen family<ref>"He was born in Zexen and his family wasn't exactly rich." - Richmond ([[Suikoden II]])</ref>.
