Stadler is gruff but principled soldier serving the League of Nations. He readily admits to his charges that he's craven in one key sense. He's a coward who can't bear the thought of them dying.

That's the reason he pushes them as hard as he possibly can. He knows the name of every soldier he's ever met or trained.
