The Fire Spear (火炎槍, Kaen Yari) is a weapon used in Suikoden and Suikoden II. It is an effective anti-cavalry weapon designed by the dwarves of Toran and developed by the Toran Liberation Army.

Function

First, the heat in the air is concentrated in a crystal at the base of the spear. It then conducts it to a Fire Rune piece attached to the base of the spear's blade, which shoots it out as a "flame" from the blade. The flames cannot be extinguished by a slight wind, and can be freely expelled thereafter by the user's concentration. The number of times it can be used is determined by the power of the rune piece. The maximum distance of the "flame" is 10 meters (32.8 feet), and its width is as much as 2 meters (6.6 feet), making it possible to spread flames over a considerable area.

The Toran Liberation Army purchased the blueprints from the Dwarf Mines and built the Secret Factory in order to build them. Though they served little practical use to the Toran Liberation Army at the time of the purchase of the blue prints, the plans for the Fire Spear were put into action in order to aid the Toran Liberation Army in taking the Scarlet Moon Empire on when it grew large enough to support it.

When Toran Castle was attacked by Teo McDohl and his Armored Cavalry, the Liberation Army travelled to the Secret Factory in order to reclaim the Fire Spears and use them in battle against Teo McDohl. The Fire Spears burned down the Armored Cavalry, resulting in a victory for the Toran Liberation Army.

Following the Gate Rune War, Viktor took the remaining spears to the City-State of Jowston for use by his mercenary army while the blueprints remained in the custody of the new Toran Republic. His carelessness caused the spears to become rusty and ineffective but the group was eventually able to recruit the spearmaster Tsai to maintain the few remaining spears for use during the Dunan Unification War.
