==Overview==
[[Sasarai]] questions the need to continue the [[Holy Kingdom of Harmonia|Harmonian]] advance. [[Albert Silverberg|Albert]] manages to convince him to continue but looks warily at the bishop as he departs. Meanwhile, the [[Grassland]]ers prepare to flood the [[Duck Clan]] lands as per [[Caesar Silverberg|Caesar]]'s plan but still resist the idea of allying with [[Zexen Federation|Zexen]]. [[Hugo (Suikoden III)|Hugo]] arrives, bearing the [[True Fire Rune]], securing the Grasslanders cooperation in the plan.

[[Chris Lightfellow|Chris]] returns to [[Brass Castle]], much to the relief of her colleagues. She confronts [[Salome Harras|Salome]] about his coup of the [[Zexen Council]] but agrees with his motives in principle. Taking up her mantle as leader of the [[Zexen Knights]] once more, she agrees to the truce with the [[Six Clans]] and prepares to march for war with Harmonia.

[[Budehuc Castle]] prepares for an influx of Grassland refugees at Salome's behest. [[Luc]] arrives at the Harmonian camp and relieves Sasarai of his duties. [[Geddoe]]'s unit are also at the camp, sourcing information. They get into a tense conversation with their rivals in the 14th Unit, led by [[Duke]]. Later that night, Luc confronts Sasarai in his tent and attacks him, taking his [[True Earth Rune]]. Sasarai and his loyal allies are then forced to flee for their lives.

The Harmonian forces, now led by Albert and Luc, begin their advance as the Grasslanders fight to hold them off. The [[Le Buque]] forces are held at bay by [[Futch]] and [[Bright]], while the Six Clans battle fiercely, drawing their enemies forward. Anticipating their plan, Albert has the regular Harmonian troops pull back and advances their 'special' unit, which survives Caesar's water attack. Still, Hugo's True Fire Rune allows him to defeat the beasts, stalling the Harmonian advance.

Caesar declares his allegiance to Hugo, who passes out from the exertion of using the rune. The chapter ends with [[Lilly Pendragon|Lilly]], [[Fred Maximillian|Fred]], and others in search of the Flame Champion, wonder what such a hero could look like.

==Differences from the game==
* The Duck Clan battle in the game is a joint withdrawal by the Six Clans and Zexen to the more defensible Brass Castle. In this volume, the defense of Duck Clan lands is successful thanks to Caesar's plan.
* There is no plan to flood Duck Clan lands in the game, although it was considered as a plot point during development.
* The Zexen Knights have still not joined up with their prospective Grasslander allies in this volume. In the game, Zexen forces fight against Harmonia in these battles.
* Sasarai disappears after questioning the Harmonian advance and Luc takes his role. In the game, Sasarai continues as leader of the Harmonian invasion for the remainder of the chapter.
* Luc's confrontation with Sasarai takes place in the [[Circle Palace]] in the game. In this volume, it takes place in the Harmonian camp in the Grasslands.
* Chris returns to Brass Castle and reunites with her comrades. In the game, she reunites with them at Duck Village, the Zexen Knights having already mobilized under Salome to support the Grasslanders.
* Geddoe's unit are present for the battle in the game, but are in the Harmonian camp in this volume.
* Because of this, Aila fights alongside Hugo and her fellow Karayans rather than with the SFDF as she does in the game.
