The Star Dragon Sword is an incarnation of the [[Night Rune]] that resided in the [[Cave of the Past]] at [[Qlon Temple]]. It had a face carved into its hilt which allowed it to talk and held a will and personality all of its own. It is one of the few weapons that can kill supposedly immortal demons, such as [[vampire|vampires]]. The sword was very prideful and prone to nagging and it was also large, making it difficult to handle by an ordinary warrior.

When [[Viktor]] and [[Hero (Suikoden)|the leader]] of the [[Toran Liberation Army]] travelled to the Cave of the Past on [[Fukien]]'s advice, they came upon the sealed Star Dragon Sword. After first throwing the group into the [[Village of the Hidden Rune|distant past]] upon awakening, when the sword learned that Viktor aimed to kill [[Neclord]], the Star Dragon Sword decided to join them. Wielding the Star Dragon Sword, Viktor was able to defeat and ostensibly destroy Neclord, as the Star Dragon Sword was an incarnation of the [[Night Rune]] and Neclord was merely a servant of the darkness.

Enraged at having been abandoned, the Star Dragon Sword attacked the group but was subdued and agreed to be used again after Viktor groveled for it. Later, helped slaying Neclord once and for all together with [[Sierra Mikain]]. It also inspired the blacksmith [[Tessai]] to join the New State Army.

==Biography==
Han Cunningham was known as a hero who fought on the front lines for the [[Highland Kingdom]]. During the war between Highland the [[City-State of Jowston]], he was a close friend and personal rival of [[Genkaku]], who fought for the City-State forces. Around this time, the two friends would come across the split [[Rune of Beginning]] and Han would inherit the [[Black Sword Rune]]. Respecting each other's abilities, their war would end through [[Darell]]'s conspiracy and Genkaku would fade away while Han was lauded as a Highland hero.

As he grew older, Han was appointed Commander of the 2nd Highland Army and assigned to the defence of Highland's Imperial Capital, L'Renouille. As such, he did not see action in the [[Dunan Unification War]] until its last battle, when the city was besieged by a numerically superior [[New State Army]]. After L'Renouille was breached, Han would make one final stand in [[L'Renouille Palace]], duelling the New State Army's [[Hero (Suikoden II)|leader]], Genkaku's adopted son.

Defeated, Han would reminisce one last time about his days with Genkaku before passing away serenely.

If you want a short encounter, fire magic will hurt this monster.

It is advisable to take out the leftmost head first as it has the ability to revive the other heads once they are destroyed. Following that, take out the right head, which uses powerful magic against your party and then turn your attention to the centre head. Be careful when attempting unite spells as together the three heads cover four elements, leaving many wide-ranged unite spells ineffective. Wind and Holy magic are the only elements that none of the heads are resilient to.

The right head boasts the highest PWR in the game, with 520, and the left head holds the highest MGC in the game, with 420. All three heads boast high MGC stats, however so if you're having trouble have characters with low MGC stats stay behind for this one. The right head also drops the most potch in the game, 200,000, not that you can spend it after the battle or anything.

Winning the battle is simply a matter of keeping your health topped up while focusing your attacks on one head at a time, rather than trying to evenly wear down all three together. As soon as you remove the first head, the pressure will alleviate and you can take down the other two heads at your leisure.

In the final battle of the [[Gate Rune War]], the [[Scarlet Moon Empire|Scarlet Moon]] Emperor [[Barbarosa Rugner|Barbarosa]], with the help of the [[Dragon King Sword]], which had the [[Sovereign Rune]] embedded in its hilt, turned into a three headed Golden Hydra. Each of the heads held a fire, lightning and wind weakness, respectively. It could best be described as a very powerful and formidable enemy, and very difficult to beat, even with the best selection of warriors in the [[Toran Liberation Army]].

==Etymology==
Gold refers to Barbarosa's title of the Golden Emperor. In Greek mythology, the Lernaean Hydra was a chthonic water beast that possessed many heads and for each head cut off it grew two more. It was killed by Heracles as part of his Twelve Labours.

Meanwhile, the use of りゅう as the word for dragon in the Golden Hydra's Japanese name seemingly reflects that the dragon is styled after Chinese rather than European dragons.

*Even though it is the final boss, the Golden Hydra doesn't have the highest HP of all of Suikoden's enemies. The [[Shell Venus]] has even more HP (15,000).

The Floating Fortress of Shasarazade, despite its name, is not literally a floating fortress. As such, it is a key defensive structure for the capital city of [[Gregminster]] along with the [[Fortress of Kwaba]].

Shasarazade also served as the base of the [[Scarlet Moon Imperial Navy]] and its commander [[Sonya Shulen]]. Although the fortress was considered extremely difficult to attack, Shasarazade has been approached by pirates several times; most notably when the pirate leader [[Anji]] pinned a wedding dress to its walls, taunting Sonya Shulen's unwed status.

In the latter stages of the [[Gate Rune War]] Shasarazade was chosen as the [[Toran Liberation Army]]'s entrance to Gregminster precisely because it was believed to be inassailable by the liberation forces. A member of the [[White Clan]] and bearer of the rare [[White Saint Rune]], in the past he tested the bravery of warriors by means of a trial, the [[Test of the Unicorn]].

[[Hix]] and [[Tengaar]] attempted to take the trial during the [[Dunan Unification War]]. Although the citizens of the Kobold Village agreed to construct a fake trial, for Hix's benefit, they were shocked when Sigfried really did appear and kidnap Tengaar. Hix stood firm and refused to do as the unicorn demanded, thus passing the trial set out for him. Satisfied, Sigfried took his leave.

Later during the Dunan Unification War, with a [[Listening Crystal]] from [[Badeaux]] and a maiden in tow, Sigfried was encountered once more and was convinced to join the [[New State Army]] for the duration of the war. Following the war, Sigfried simply returned quietly to the forest, having little interest in anything but pure maidens.

Shun Min was a young girl who helped her father [[Retso]] as he toiled in the cafeteria in [[Raftfleet]]. She was a gentle, kind girl who loved the fish she raised for consumption, a skill she learned from her mother. Because of this, she was insistent that people fully eat the fish that had given up their lives. The loss of her mother at a young age also gave Shun Min a maturity beyond her years as she strove to support her father.

She would join the [[Imperial City Recapture Army]] along with her father, helping to raise the fish at [[Ceras Lake]] for her father's kitchen. At the castle, she worked excitedly but also found time to make friends and relax, taking in [[Chisato]]'s puppet show and spending time with [[Eresh]], [[Lelei]] and [[Haswar]]. She would declare that she would only ever marry someone more skilled at cooking than her own father.

Following the [[Sun Rune War]], Shun Min grew into a beautiful young woman, eventually becoming the lover of [[Hai Yo]] while her father became one of the [[Black Dragon Group]]'s four grand masters. She opposed the Black Dragon Group's [[Dragon Plan]] and so stole the [[Moon Bird Recipe]].

However, in her attempt to steal the recipe, Shun Min was fatally wounded and died after passing on the Moon Bird Recipe to Hai Yo, imploring him to keep it out of the hands of the Black Dragon Group.

Retso was a wandering chef, traveling with his daughter, [[Shun Min]], aspiring to find the fish needed to replicate the legendary "[[Mythical Fish Sashimi]]" his cooking master had once prepared for him. Retso was a specialist in fish dishes, wielding dual knives in order to give himself greater speed and control over his technique. His search for the proper fish for this legendary dish led him to the rivers of [[Queendom of Falena|Falena]], eventually taking a job in [[Raftfleet]].

At [[Ceras Lake]], the [[Hero (Suikoden V)|Prince of Falena]] would catch what could only be described as a "strange fish" but was, in actuality, the rare fish needed for Retso's Mythical Fish Sashimi. When prepared, however, the resulting dish tasted awful, Shun Min not even being able to finish her serving. Puzzled by the disparity in what he had prepared compared to his master's work, he would join the [[Imperial City Recapture Army]] in order to investigate the matter further at Ceras Lake.

While serving in the Recapture Army, Retso bounded with [[Logg]], another father in the army, about their daughters. Retso felt a great deal of pride for his daughter Shun Min, who he considered very spirited and quite lovely, but felt guilt that ever since her mother had died, Shun Min had stopped trying to be a kid, and instead tried to act all grown up simply to spare him any trouble, making him feel like an idiot father. Many in the army enjoyed Retso's dishes, especially [[Nikea]], although she sometimes wished Retso would involve more meats and less fish. The detective [[Oboro]] considered Retso's knife handling and presentation a sheer work of art, especially when it came to dealing with his specialty, sashimi.

Retso continued to study his master's Mystical Fish Sashimi, making some progress during the war, noting that the secret may have nothing to do with the fish at all. Following the end of the [[Sun Rune War]], Retso discovered the secret of his master's dish, but, deciding it was best kept a secret, never said a word on it for quite a long period of time. He would be approached by [[Jinkai]] and would become a founding member of the [[Black Dragon Group]].

Gradually, Retso would lose his way, becoming influenced by Jinkai's [[Dragon Plan]]. It was the death of Shun Min, which he blamed in his grief on her lover, [[Hai Yo]], that led him to fully support Jinkai and use his master's technique to further their goals.

Retso, now known as the White Tiger, was one of the four lords of the Black Dragon Group and was Hai Yo's 9th and 11th challenger at the [[New State Army Headquarters]]. He attempted to wrest control of the [[Moon Bird Recipe]] from Hai Yo by defeating him in a cook-off.

He easily defeated Hai Yo and gained the recipe but it was quickly revealed he had used hypnosis to convince the judges to award him perfect marks. This hypnosis was implied to be the true secret behind the great taste of the Mythical Fish Sashimi he had long searched for. His deception uncovered, Retso would agree to compete fairly only to be defeated by Hai Yo. Realizing his mistake and regaining his true pride as a chef, he would support Hai Yo in his final cook-off against Jinkai.

At 470 metres high, Mount Seifu is one of the tallest mountains in the [[Toran Republic]]. The temperature of the mountain is quite low, leading it to be an ideal growing place for plants that are not native to Toran. Its name derives from the cold winds which come down the mountains.

In addition, because this mountain is intricate has many valleys, many bandit hideouts have been built here in the past. [[Varkas]]'s bandit group lurked in the mountains usually, attack Imperial tax convoys.

Following the [[Gate Rune War]], the mountain has become much more quiet and peaceful.

The magical barrier around Magician's Island meant that no one could reach the island without Leknaat's permission, such as messengers coming for her astrological readings, the [[Astral Conclusions]].

Although the disastrous beginning to the war was reversed by [[Genkaku]], Darell was overtaken by envy and plotted against him. He coated Genkaku's sword with poison before his duel with [[Han Cunningham]], forcing him to forfeit the bout, and [[Kyaro Town]], to Highland. Darell subsequently had Genkaku exiled.

The Dagon is a giant mysterious fish with limbs. During the Gate Rune War, many were seen around [[Kalekka]] and the [[Secret Factory]]. As well as attacking with the spear in its hands, it can also poison a target with its tail. It does not have outstanding abilities and should be easily defeated if you take advantage of its weakness to fire and wind attribute attacks.

Oannes are not especially strong enemies although their comparatively high HP can lead to them lasting longer in battle than expected. These extra turns can begin to wear on a party's HP as they traverse the [[Toran Lake Castle]] if they are not adequately prepared.

==Etymology==
Oannes is a 3rd century BCE Babylonian mythical being who taught mankind wisdom. He was said to have the body of a fish but underneath the figure of a man. He is described as dwelling in the Persian Gulf, and rising out of the waters in the daytime and furnishing mankind instruction in writing, the arts and the various sciences.

The Japanese name derives from sakana. Sakana is a type of foodstuff, traditionally fish although meat and vegetables are not uncommon, that accompanies the drinking of alcohol in Japan.
